Nobody knows what the real rate of suicide was back then. Because 50 to 100 years ago, it was much less controlled society. When people drop dead, sometimes 911 wasn't even called. Murders were way more common and frequent due to how easy it was to get away with it. Back then farmland was easy to find so it was easy to bury hide a dead body. Now farm land is hard to find.
68 years ago, nobody called the cops in suicide. It was optional. If someone saw you standing on top of a bridge, the cops wouldn't come and stand there 2 hrs with you persuading you to not jump off

Back then, police officers picked which cases to investigate. And a lot of them were racist. If they found a Chinese dead on the ground, killed by a white man. Often times the police wouldn't care to investigate.
