What do you think about the death of sedans?

In my area, I see SUVs as the big thing. Ford is in the process of discontinuing several sedan models in the US (Fusion, Fiesta, etc) to fit the SUV takeover trend. Yes SUVs are nice, but the sedan is a practical option for many people and it's unfortunate.

Practicality & inner happiness are the last things on many people's priorities.

With inflation, gas prices & people still demanding bigger and bigger, it's a testament to the superficiality of society. My brother & his girlfriend had to take on a roomate because they supposedly couldn't afford the rent. My parents made it sound like we should be sensitive because they're struggling, my response was (sarcastically mocking not only the excess, but absence of even basic reasoning/thinking on the part of any of them) as follows:

"We've got 2 dogs, unlimited data plans, Netflix, Amazon Prime, she takes horesback riding lessons once a week, just got a new iPhone, why can't we afford our rent?"... my parents shut up pretty quick, especially when mom tried to lecture about dad being retired on fixed income & I brought up their $130/mo cable bill & how they're just as bad.

I live in US with a 500 mb/mo $60 per year phone plan on a 6-year old model phone (just use WiFi as 99% of stuff people do on phones with data isn't necessary, can wait for WiFi, but superficial excess), a $6,200 car I got with less than 18,000 miles & $319 a year to insure at minimum legal required coverage, as it's so cheap if it got in an accident it's not even worth insuring, gets over 40mpg. I make less than any of them, but have $43,000 in savings because I keep my bills to what's necessary & practical.

Modern society, in my experience, lacks capacity to think, reason & simply emotional reacts to exploit whatever it believes will give a dopamine hit, often blindly w/o consideration to consequences... walk in a market for evidence - nobody seems focused, attentive, considering what they're buying, why - but mindlessly going from thing to think, often buying things to do nothing more than feed addictions to food.

In the UK, sedans - or "saloons" as we call them - died out in the 1970s. The only real exceptions were minicabs and German made "old man" cars (BMW, Mercedes, VW Passat, etc).

The "compact crossover" trend is ridiculous though. They're literally just normal hatchbacks, but with raised ride height to make them worse to drive, uglier to look at, and less fuel efficient - which is completely retarded, considering the lengths that manufacturers go to in other aspects of the car's design, to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.

Similarly, cars today are getting ever bigger and heavier, so the amount of energy they use is much greater. A Tesla model X carries more than half a ton of batteries (but no spare wheel, because that would add weight), and has the aerodynamics of a medium sized shed - how does that make any sense, especially in a country like the US, where the vast majority of electricity is generated from non-renewable sources?

Added to that, most drivers of large SUVs simply don't have the skill to drive them. They probably couldn't drive a normal car either, but a larger car does tend to highlight their inadequacy, especially when it comes to parking (it doesn't help that the average size of a parking space hasn't gone up at nearly the same rate as the average size of a car).

The models you see becoming ubiquitous aren't SUVs by definitions. They're crossovers. A crossover is basically a shortened minivan, built on a car platform. An actual SUV is a 4 wheel drive full size van with some cosmetic modifications, built on a truck platform.

Sedans didn't go away; they just got taller roof lines and seating positions higher off the ground, probably so the driver can see a little better around all the other crossovers and SUVs on the road.

Yeah, I own a large 4wd crossover for a winter beater. But when we get out of the season where we're tossing corrosive road salt all over the place, I love having my selection of 4 different 2 door coupes to pick from :)

Sedans aren't going away. Many of the coming EVs will be sedans or crossovers which are like sedans but with better cargo space. For instance, the KIA EV6.

I hate it. When I get a car I usually keep it for the better part of a decade. The last car I had was a dodge charger. I would never buy a SUV as they're impractical and needlessly expensive. About a year ago some punk turned in front of my car and the result was a total that forced me back into the car market and I discovered what you are now saying.

I have never liked SUV's. They are just too damn big. If Ford wants to shoot themselves in the foot, let them. Maybe they will go out of business once and for all since they are putting all their bags in to one basket. What do you think they will do when the SUV craze ends? Whoops... fun while it lasted, shut down time!

Ford bought Mazda so they will keep the Japanese designs as sedans. Ford inserted a Probe engine into them which is a shameful act. Ford has a lot of 💩 lines that need to be discontinued.

Sedans are following the old station wagon. They’re not as ergonomic and safe as an SUV. Sports cars will be available though.
