I think if you know his tastes, you could get him a mug catered to him, such as one with his university logo on it, or one of his favourite movie like Star Wars or X Men if he likes that, or a mug of your country's flag, or one with his or your photo on it through a specially company that prints custom mugs. You could also get him a custom key chain. If he doesn't like objects, try getting him some hickory farms cheese or pop corn seasoning through the kernels brand.
You can send him flowers... get him tickets for his favorite show, sport event, etc... or a gift certificate for his favorite restaurant... and a gas card!
