For a tangible gift, you can always give a handmade or customized present with a meaning behind it.
For example, you are dating a girl who has all the money to buy whatever jewelry she wants, however, if you gift her a butterfly pendant with a letter that says 'because you give me butterflies in my stomach' that will suddenly make an ordinary present very cute and meaningful. Or maybe you are visiting your friend who is rich, and you could bake some cookies that you know your friend loves and give those as a little present. Or you know your cousin is a vintage fashion enthusiast and already owns a lot of vintage clothes, if you know a vintage sweater for her then suddenly that sweater will become very special to her although she probably owns like ten such sweaters already.
Many places take orders for custom mugs, t-shirts, pen-holders, candles, jewelry, cakes, anything and everything. So even if you can't make something but yourself you can always order it.
And always always attach a letter/card to any gift. No matter how ordinary or unique your gift is. I once gifted a friend a pocket mirror and a birthday card with it that had a religious prayer written on it, a prayer recommended to recite when seeing yourself in the mirror and it is basically all about being thankful to God for a beautiful appearance and asking God for a beautiful character on the inside too. She loved the gift a lot.

If you have a friend who does not have any needs, you could get them something that would inspire their curiosity such as a small coloured stone collection, a book on endangered species or beautiful birds, a book on brain or body anatomy with pictures and maps, a book on foreign foods and foreign cooking, a book on artwork by Salvador Dali or Picasso. Or a world atlas poster.
My children playing in their pajamas on Christmas morning when they were toddlers and preschool age... just enjoying the magic of it all. There was one particular morning that really comes to mind, but I don't know how else to describe it. They were just having so much fun together and it was beautiful to witness. I think it may have been the first year they could really interact with eachother.
