I avoid Walmart at ALL costs, but I just assumed they, and other big retailers were already at this level of technology. Other than the locked up toothpaste and Juicy Fruit gum, nothing in that video shocked me.
However, I was in a Walmart earlier this year (not on my own volition, but because someone I was with dragged me into one - I didn't buy anything), and I saw they had installed a massive self-checkout area, and that there were no longer ANY cashiers...at all. Not a single one. I literally said to my friend in utter disgust: "Look at this... look at how many jobs this eliminates." I took note of the sheer number of cameras around the self-checkout area from every conceivable angle, and even though we certainly weren't there to shoplift anything, all I wanted to do was get the hell out of there. It felt odd and disturbingly invasive.
But as a rule, I hate self-checkouts and I never use them. I think I have only used one once or twice for as long as they've been a thing. I don't like how they eliminate jobs from people who would normally be running the cashiers. The middle class is rapidly disappearing, and now they're eliminating low paying jobs with all this tech and AI crap? Hell no. I'm not contributing to that. I'm sure it's an eventuality that it'll come no matter what, and that there isn't a damn thing I can do about it, but man, people need to wake up to this stuff. They talk about shoplifting being a crime, and it most certainly is, but no one ever talks about what big business does that eliminate jobs of all kinds. Everything from low-level retail positions to manufacturing jobs, and even tech jobs. Just watch once employers of every description figure out how to use AI to their advantage, so they can further "streamline productivity" and eliminate even more jobs. It's already happening. Simply because AI and computer learning can do it infinitely faster and more efficiently, and saves (more like makes) employers tons of money in the process. Money that normally would have gone toward a human being just trying to sustain themselves and their family.
All this tech and a perceived sense of "convenience" is literally taking away jobs and making people poorer while Big Corp. gets richer and richer. They've figured it out and eventually they're going to make our society a welfare and police state. It's a sad state of affairs and a sad commentary on our society as a whole. I hate to sound so negative, but I don't like any of this stuff I'm seeing.

so fucking what? why is this a big deal? just don't freaking steal shit and you won#t have an issue xD another problem was if this was information shared with the government, attached to an individual social credit score, like they're doing in china.
Yes... i mean mine was check receipts. This was an awful job because it was lame and we went to a ghetto walmart. People did not like us asking for receipts. And we were told to make a description of them. However, people did try to steal and they did. SO i guess we were... necessary? But that walmart made everyone...EVERYONE quit. :) I haven't seen them on indeed for a while.
Where I live wallmart closed because of the shoplifting. Also if this was France those automated checkouts would get smashed with baseball bats and people would refuse to use them as they put people out of work

Americans will complain about anything you throw at them. Is in their nature to get ofended and reject everything.
We have these in Ireland on every supermarket for years and nobody complains about them or about being watched BECAUSE IT MAKES THING BETTER.yea i know someone that got caught stealing but my dumb ass decided to go back for him and he threw me under the bus and said i stole it, they caught him with it but pulled me back into the little room too, that dude was a clown, he had a wad of cash in his pocket at the time and he was stealing, damn clown, but yea they have undrrcover security that dress normal, walking around the walmart, the security in the back room have access to all the cameras.
self check out is meant to reduce resistance
however if they are locking up items that is undermining that non-resistance
The door automatically open for you... To reduce resistance.
Walmart nor any business cares about you. Don't be fooled. They are just following strategies that help them earn more cash.Just don't steal. Simple. Life could be worse.
Yeah, I've seen these Asian people place things in these shopping bags at Walmart and never checked out, so you gather things from there, and they never got caught, but if I did that I would be sitting in jail.
I always knew that I was being watched in the self checkout line. I sometimes use the self checkout at Home Depot or Stop and Shop but I never used the one at Walmart. I hardly go there anymore sinc ethe one in my town was bulldozed.
Pretty awful treating their customers like criminals. Maybe some shopper protection laws should be instituted. I don't support theft, but I don't support monitoring shoppers like inmates.
No clue! Do people other than cashiers work there? I can never find anyone to help me!
I don't get the point. I blue cities you're allowed to steal.
I will never use self checkout in any store until I get a discount for doing their job. If the cashier screws up, it's on them.
If all that's true, you should think twice about stealing. Blame the ones that do not Wal-Mart.
Logic?
Well, I watch too much porn anyways so I don't shoplift lol
I don't think wal-mart knows how wal-mart security works.
I do not shop there.
