Should I make her pay?

Question

It's not the first day of April, but it is Super Bowl Sunday in the United States, where everyone goes crazy, so please take this question with a grain of salt...

My SO has taken over the only shelf in the pantry that's tall enough to hold the Family Size box of my favorite cereal, which I always used to buy. I now have to buy the Regular Size, which costs 7 cents more per ounce. It also means that I have to go to the grocery store more often, because the box is smaller and doesn't last as long, so there's the added cost for gasoline and wear-and-tear on my car.

I figure this will cost me an extra US$3.14 a year for my favorite cereal.

Should I insist that she pay me my extra cost for forcing me to buy the regular size?

Huh? This is a joke right? Yeah it has to be a joke. That is your SO you are living together meaning your shared space is together. This is am extremely slippery slope because if you provided the house then your SO likely sacrificed a lot of stuff. Did you have to pay her back for all of those? To give you a more real world example when my wife and I got our first place together she had to sacrifice far more than I did because I didn't have a lot I still don't. If we were to price out both sides I would have had to pay her probably 15k$ because of what she sacrificed. Meanwhile she might have paid me a few hundred. Thing is we now have all those possessions back new and better versions of course and multiple houses. My point though is pulling a stunt like that is a double edged sword. You may not like the return fire.

Although you are a cereal killer if you want to save space buy cereal containers & when it comes to buying cereal buy what is on sale including your family size boxes.

If you're familiar with accounting, I'd recommend applying the materiality principle here. For example, you wouldn't go through what it takes to depreciate a $15 stapler because it simple isn't worth it. For less than $5, it would matter even less.

Another point here is your mileage calculation. At the current JTR rate of 67 cents a mile for fuel and wear-and-tear, that $3.14 comes down to slightly less than five (5) miles total in extra trips to the store. If the distance is that short, I would consider walking not only to save the vehicle expense, but also so that your leg muscles don't atrophy and die.

Cereal boxes are never filled to the top. Simply cut it down to size. I'd also point out that if you don't eat it fast enough once opened fungus will take hold unnoticed and you'll get mycotoxins. Your wife could be saving your life.

No, I don't think she should pay. in my opinion, you're dissecting the problem down to too many issues... let it go and find another place for your cereal! Or, ditch the cereal and have some hard boiled eggs. They keep you fuller in the long run.

She should most definitely pay this extra cost but don't forget the interest you would have got if that $3.14 had stayed in your bank account. Don't know your current interest rates but that could easily be $0.16 pa for a total of $3.30 pa.
