When listing an item for sale on eBay, Kijiji, etc. why does the word "new" confuse so many sellers?

It doesn't confuse them, it's a deliberate attempt to mislead. I would define new as being unused and not preowned but they can twist it to mean new in stock.

What I hate is the phrase "style" which just means a knock off copy of something, e. g
Gucci style handbag £5. I hate it because when you sort in price order all the fakes float to the top.

on eBay at least it has to be new to be listed with that description. anything else is open box at best, and even that has to be a brand new item where only the box is affected
