Do stainless steel water bottles keep the water cold?

Question

Planning to buy a stainless steel bottle for when I go to the pool. I usually take plastic bottles with me but those tend to get warm after some time even when not under the sun and I hate drinking warm water.

As has already been said it depends on the construction of the container. If it is just a single wall steel container it is not good for maintaining the temperature of the liquid inside because steel is a good conductor of heat and will easily let the liquid inside get warmer or colder trying to equalize the temperature inside with the temperature outside the vessel. If it is steel on the outside but has either an inner container made of a good insulating material or even a second steel liner separated from the outside skin by air you will get an insulating effect. That's what you want. So it doesn't really matter if it is steel on the outside as long as there is a good insulation layer on the inside.

Avoid simple metal ones, you need to have insulated ones. i use a Yeti Rambler (and a couple of other makes)

Hydroflask or Yeti are double-walled insulated containers that will do that. A single-walled stainless steel bottle will not be any better than plastic in that area.

Both come in a variety of colors. I like a medium size, like 32oz to 36oz. Any larger and it becomes annoying to haul around. Much smaller and I don't have enough.

I have 2 S’well bottles that keep cold for hours and even longer if I add ice. And this is in Arizona heat being in the 100’s every day, so definitely recommend those!

No, Metal conducts heat really well so it will transfer heat from the outside to the water inside. You need a thermoflask. These have two walls seperated by a vacuum which don't conduct heat.

To keep water cold, you need an insulated bottle, and try to keep it out if direct sunlight.

Stainless steel will heat up from sunlight and warm up the water.

You can freeze a plastic water bottle overnight. It will slowly thaw during the day.

Unless you get an insulated one it really does not keep water cool. At work I put a lot of ice in mine before I fill it up.

Metal will transfer heat in/out of the liquid in the bottle faster than will plastics. You need either an "insulated" plastic bottle, or a "double-walled, vacuum" metal bottle. A good vacuum bottle will set you back $20+ now, with some of the better ones nearing $50. Yes, there are glass vacuum bottles, but with the possibility of breakage, and the advances made in metal vac bottles, the met vac ones are a good choice.

I have many of them and the best I have found is the Yeti Rambler. It is simply amazing. I have left it in the car on extremely hot days and come back 4 hours later to a nice ice cold drink. I can wake up the next morning at home and find a drink from the day before with lots of ice and drink still in it. They come in all colors too.

I'd get a Stainless Vacuum water bottle they will keep your water cold for around 12 hours or a hot drink hot for around 6 hours, you can get them off Amazon, Ebay, or a direct supplier like Greenssteel who also have a store on Amazon where a 17oz bottle will set you back around $14,

Nothing one layered will keep anything cold for long. You need something with a thermal layer or vacuum. You can get thermal flasks from Amazon for 10 bucks.

No. Metal conducts heat really easily.
You need a thermos flask. Those have a near vacuum between the inside and the outside, through which heat cannot easily pass, thus ensuring the temperature on the inside remains the same.

Use 2-3 layers of cloth on that ss bottle. It helps to keep water cold for long time. Plastic bottles don't. I've used both.
