How important is gas mileage when considering a new vehicle?

Safety is the first issue for me followed by gas mileage. When I can afford one I want an electric vehicle so I can just drive by gas stations !

No because it depends on what I wanted and liked. Besides what I got might get less gas mileage, but has a lot higher resale value.
