How many gifts do you give a casual friend/acquaintance for her fortieth birthday?

We’re going to a party in the city and I don’t know what to wear, how many gifts to buy, or how much to spend on gifts. So far, four people are going (one is me); and three might be going.

Generally, this woman dresses up in expensive clothes when she goes out. I can’t ask my friends, or they’d be jealous because she didn’t invite them and they all know her (it’s a small community and everyone knows everyone else, despite living in a big city). I dress casually to smart casually and it will be summer. Summers here are hot and muggy.

I think a summer dress would be nice to wear. It can be, both casual and dressy. I also think gift cards are a nice gift, it allows the person to buy what they really want. I know i always appreciate gift cards.
