Self-checkout in shops?

I don't know about your country, but in most countries in southern Europe, we have this trend where large clothes shops and supermarkets do away with personnel and expect you to do the check out yourself: you scan your goods one by one, put them in a bag, pay by card and scan your ticket on the way out. Where there used to be a line of 7 cashiers giving adequate service to the clients, there are now 1 or sometimes 2 'cashiers' just watching and a security guard at the exit. Cheaper for the store, but is this an advantage for us clients?

considering the fact that I've been overcharged three out of the seven last time I went to get groceries... I would be more than glad to check it out myself

It's not something I mind because it reduces queues and makes getting a few items much quicker

It's quicker if there is no queue at the self-checkout. If there is, I don't see any difference.

The worst are the clothes shops where they expect you to remove the alarm systems yourself. These normally consist of two magnetic parts held together by a pin. At times, we had to call someone to assist us with the alarms.

I've never been at self check out for clothes but groceries for sure make things much swifter as there can be 3 or 4 self checkouts in the same space for just one attended checkout.

Walmart in the United States was doing this for many years and I believe they stopped doing it because people were stealing the merchandise

We have these at grocery stores where I live. I don't mind them at all. It is usually quicker.

It's not the case here, only in big supermarkets and only in several branches and you cannot go there if you have more than 3 items so basically no one uses it

yeah it sucks. The most ridiculous is that a store will get rid of cashiers, add self-checkout then have half of them CLOSED! I'm doing the work, there should never be a closed self-checkout.

That's still not the case here in Italy. We still have plenty of personnel ready to help.

There's a lot of that in the US as well. Most grocery stores have shitty self-checkout systems, except Whole Foods.
