Do you use self-checkouts at the store?

I prefer to use self-checkouts then go to the regular cashier. A lot of cashier's are really rude and not very friendly anyways. Self checkouts are the way of the future.

Please don't judge anyone.

In grocery stores, no way, because I buy a ton of food (I cook a lot.)

I wil use it in places like pharmacies, hardware stores. I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, this is going to have major economic impact going forward, with many people losing their jobs. On the other hand, those people need to develop some other skills anyway. Human interaction is quite important. We are all going our own way, to varying degrees. Communication is getting weirder, and people are getting weirder.

But some stores are getting so bad, the customer service (which is partly due to lacklustre, ineffectual, management, and partly due to employees just not giving a fuck anymore) is barely functional at some places. So when they install self-checkout, and they expect me to do all the work, and bag up my own stuff, with my own bag (for christ's sake), if some bar code doesn't scan, I honestly don't really care anymore. They created the situation. I'm sure theft is going way up. But it's the cost of the way they are doing business. Apparently theft costs less than labour.

Yes, I usually use them now days. It seems they are often quicker and there are usually more than cashiers sadly. I noticed at my local Walmart, there are way less cashier lanes and way more self checkout zones.

I do. I didn't used to- when they first started popping up in huge numbers, their functionality was HORRENDOUS. You'd scan an item, be told to bag it, bag it, then be told to remove it from the bag. So you would, and you'd be told to bag it. So you would, and you'd be told to remove it from the bag. Repeat until a cashier came over to help you.

But at some point, they fixed that problem, and now they generally work just fine. And given that the customers who still use the cashiers are generally those with dozens or scores of items, it's all the smoother for those of us who run in and just pick up a few things.

I try not to, that is taking someone's job. I like the interaction with the checkout person. Going to self checkout just makes the big chain stores more money because they don't have to pay an employee to ring us out, they don't have to pay health insurance on that employee. It's just my thought, by going to self checkout I am actually helping someone lose their job, they can't support their family without this job. It's not like Walmart can't afford to pay them they just want to turn bigger profits

Definitely. I don't want to talk to cashiers and have them give me back the wrong change or make me "bag my own stuff" even though that's their job. (And not saying I do this, but it's also way easier to shoplift using self-checkout.) In South Korea, the majority of stores are self-checkout. Only like 25% of the time, do you still have human cashiers.

Only a handfull of stores has self-checkouts here in germany, i know one Netto (grocerystore), Ikea and Bauhaus (Hardwarestore).
We shop at neither of these regularly, Ikea and Bauhaus maybe twice a year.

So we got no other option as to use cashier checkout. But if i have the choice, i pick the one with the least expected waittime.

I usually go to the cashier since I’m very clumsy and I (probably ingeniously) think that going to cashier instead of machine would valorise the work of the persons and they won’t be fired in order to be substituted by machines.

I loathe any circumstance where I HAVE to stand in line for a cashier/bagger to do the work for me.

Yes I use it. I used to be a cashier it gets annoying after a while. All that fake smiling and greeting. Can't be bothered.

I agree with you about the rudest crudest obnoxious check out people. And my ad is the slowest.
I like self-check out until the machine malfunctions. And the person that's supposed to help you is no word to be found.

I have yet used a self chekout that I have not had to have help or had to leave something there because it does not ring up right. I find that as long as you are nice the cashier is nice.

Only if I have a few items or no other choice. Several stores around me have gone 100% self checkout but still have 3 or 4 employees monitoring the self checkout which makes 0 sense to me.

I use door dash and instacart wash my laundry service the less I have talk to humans the better
