Why some people love keeping up with the Joneses later complain about the economy?

I seen people mocked others for their frugal lifestyle. This one time guy was talking about the recent actor of blues clues went on saying he would buy this huge mansion and BMW. I just can't understand why try to impress people you don't know and probably do not even care?

Seriously. What is the point of buying new technology or designer clothes shoes handbags later it ends up in donations? The economy situation is no excuses I'm sure people can make it work but collecting coupons buying generic brands.

Because they're not buying the object. They're buying the status. The object is just a trophy, a symbol of success that they can use to signal their importance to the world. The fact that the object ends up in a donation pile is irrelevant; the symbol has done its job. It's like paying someone to tell you a lie and then being surprised that the lie isn't useful.
