Why have people been buying expensive cookie cutter houses?

This is an Example of a house sold for $280k, believe it or not. this similar looking house is owned by a newlywed couple I know. Props to them, but I’m surprised they didn’t go for something bigger or nicer for that price. Even one of my coworkers did the same. I’m sure a few people probably like it but i’m curious on what’s the catch.

I imagine it depends on where you live, and the local housing market.

That house, for example, would easily go for $350k-$400k where I live, despite the fact that it's just a cookie cutter house that's virtually identical to it's neighbors. I guarantee the build quality would be abysmal, too.

Unfortunately, that's just what gets built, because most neighborhoods are owned by the developer, and it's cheaper for them if they build all the houses alike, with shitty materials. They slap them together one after another, so the quality sucks, and then they sell them for an inflated price.

Since that's what is available, that's what people buy. It costs too much for most people to design & build their own houses, and the developers won't let them build in existing locations, because they already own the land.

Unfortunately, since they sell the houses for an inflated amount, that sets the prices for all the other houses in the area, whether they're owned by the same developer, or not.

sometimes... the value of a house is in the location, if it is close to a school or the place you work at, it can make the difference

if the area is safer, more quiet and less busy than others, then it is definitely worth it

also... if it is within an area that won't flood, won't catch fires or stuff like that, then that place is better off than many other much more expensive places that sure, they look much nicer, they're bigger too but might present way too many issues than are not easy nor fun to deal with for long

That is not even close to expensive. 280K won't even buy you a one-bedroom apartment around here. The median house price right now here is $981,259.

Why do you imagine they could get something bigger or nicer for that money? The cost of a house depends greatly on location.
