There are so many dog breeds, it's not surprising that some breeds crop up and you've never heard of them before. Here's some handsome, less common dog breeds that are family friendly and relatively easy to raise.

Rhodesian Ridgeback (African Lion Dog/Hound)

Origin: Rhodesia

Height: Males - 63–69 cm (25–27 in), Females - 61–66 cm (24–26 in)

Temperament: Rhodesian ridgebacks are loyal, intelligent and reserved towards strangers. They are sensitive to poor treatment when young and require award based training and socialisation. They protect their families and can become excellent guard dogs with adequate training. It doesn't require extensive exercise.

They're called "ridgeback" because their fur causes a line down their back:

Samoyed (Samoyedskaya)

Origin: Russia

Height: 24 inches

Temperament: Despite it's wolf like appearance, they're incredibly friendly, gentle and energetic dogs. They're considered to be multi talented dogs which require quite a lot of exercise. They can be white, cream or golden in colour.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

Origin: Ireland

Height: 19 inches

Temperament: These dogs are very good with kids and shed very little fur. They're very affectionate to their owners.

Vizsla

Origin: Hungary

Height: 24 inches

Temperament: A super friendly dog that's low maintenance and sheds very little.

I have a friend who had a Rhodesian Ridgeback. He's so adorable!

The only rare breed of dog I know is called Fila Brasileiro. I wouldn't say they're very friendly to strangers but they're guard dogs that are extremely loyal to their owners. They're huge too because they're a mastiff breed and have to be properly trained form when they're puppies. I've only seen this breed once a few years ago at a vet. Because of their extreme loyal nature, I remember the nurse cautioning the people in the waiting room that such and such type of dog is coming out of the vet's office and to watch our pets and all. I googled to learn more about this breed of dog when I went home.

I don't know of any uncommon ones, but as far as common ones that are often frowned upon for their stereotype of being aggressive:

rottweilers and pitbulls make the BEST pets. They're the goofiest, kindest and most devoted dogs I've ever come across.

Any dog can be aggressive if not brought up right. All breeds can be loving and friendly. :)

I have had chows my whole life. Never had a mean one or one that but anyone, but that's all I hear about. They get lumped in with the other "killer" breeds :(

I think it would also be great to look into Rhodesian rescues. The breed is rare, and there are dogs born without the ridge, rendering them useless to breeders and showers. In the past, those puppies were killed, often not humanely.

You forgot to add that viszlas are EXTREMELY high energy, and often become so bonded to their owner that they become destructive when left alone due to separation anxiety. They don't call them velcro dogs for nothing. But they are so smart and are such great dogs.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are also excellent for long distance jogging partners. They're said to be able to keep up with a horse for miles, and they're very tolerant to heat.

I think there might be an old meaning that isn't really put into play nowadays. I would guess that hounds are hunter gatherer or sporting type dogs, who have a job basically and are more than just "pets", but that could be completely wrong so you should look it up!

Hounds can be contrasted with gundogs, which assists hunters by identifying the location of prey and/or recovering shot quarry. The hound breeds were the first hunting dogs. There are three types of hound, with several breeds within each type:

Sighthounds (also called gazehounds), which follow prey predominantly by speed, keeping it in sight. These dogs are fast and assist hunters in catching game—fox, hare, deer and elk.
Scenthounds, which follow prey or others (like missing people) by tracking its scent. These dogs have endurance but are not fast runners.
The remaining breeds of hound follow their prey using both sight and scent; difficult to classify as they are neither sighthound nor scent hound.
