Sometimes I have a hard time sleeping and get up in the middle of the night and look up random animal facts on my Kindle. So, I thought I'd share some of those facts with you. Today's random fact contestants are the Giant Panda and Dolphins, I decided to pair these two up instead of writing a bunch of separate takes. Without further wait, here's facts about pandas and dolphins you may not know. Please enjoy! :)

Giant Panda Bears:

1. The roundness in there face is due to large cheek muscles. Their cheek and jaw muscles have to be strong enough for them to bite through bamboo.

2. They can spend anywhere for 14 to 16 hours a day eating. Unlike other bears they do not hibernate because bamboo does not allow them to bulid up enough fat reserves to get through the winter. Most of their food is not digested.

3. There are only 1,000 pandas left in the world, the biggest threat are loss of habitat and poaching.

4. Female pandas only ovulate once a year, leaving her fertile only a short few days.

5. Due to their large size, pandas are usually safe in the wild.

6. They have a special linging in their throat to protect from bamboo splinters. They also have a unique thumb-like appendage which helps them to hold onto bamboo stalks.

7. There is only 240 captive pandas in the whole world and most of them are in China.

8. They need a large amount of terriotry to survive, one panda alone needs four miles to live so that there is enough food and resources for it.

9. Their fur is surprisingly thick and course, they sometimes roll down hills to dislodge twigs and debris that gets caught in their fur.

10. Giant pandas stare at their oppent with their heads down to intimdate them. Scientists believe they do this because their black ears could look like a second pair of eyes.

11. Chinese lengend says that pandas use to be all white. A small girl tried to save a panda cub from a leopard and the girl got killed, the pandas came to her funeral with armbands of black ashes. When they went to hug each other and wiped their tears away, the ashes left those marks behind.

12. Though panda attacks are rare, if it feels threatened by a human it can attack.

13. When Nixon visited China in 1972, he was given a panda as a gift.

14. Due to their large size, pandas are slow runners.

15. Chinese believed that the pelt of a panda could provide magical protection. Laws were passed against illegally hunting pandas, however not strictly forced. Now the laws are strictly forced and try to protect the species.

1.They have a tight and streamedlined physique that allows them to swim super fast. A killer whale is actually a type of dolphin.

2. Dolphins can live just about anywhere, some can even be found in fresh water. However, most of them can be found in warm and shallow water.

3. Though their peak is in the spring and fall, dolphins do mate all year long and are the only other mammal besides humans that mate for pleasure. A female dolphin having twins is rare, she usually only has one.

4. Not unknown to everyone is that dolphins are playful creatures and they usually live in social groups of five or even hundred.

5. They work in groups to hunt and catch fish, dolphins are considered to be omnivores.

6. Some dolphins are considered to be endangered, with the biggest threat being the human race.

7. The bottlenose dolphin lives up to an average of 20 years. Some studies suggest dolphins can live into their 40's and 50's, some female dolphins have been shown to live into their 60's but this is quite rare.

8. They breathe air into their lungs just like humans do, through a nostril located on the top of their head. Dolphins are able to hold their breath and breathe four to fives times per minute.

9. New facts show that scientists believe dolphins to be almost as intelligant as humans in certain ways. Their brains are larger than a humans and the cortex has the same complicated folds found with human intelligence.

10. Aside from being smart, dolphins are also very compassionate creatures. There have been documented cases of dolphins saving humans and even trying to save other dolphins.

11. Dolphins rely on echolocation to hunt and navigate, echolocation works by listening for echos after bouncing high-pitched sounds off of an objects. The echos are picked up by the lower jaws and foreheads of dolphins, they are then directed to the ears and the brain where they are interupted. By emitting high frequency clicks, dolphins are able to determine the shape, size, speed, distance and direction of travel reguarding their surrounding objects.

12. In recent years trainers have stepped fourth and expressed their concerns about the swim with dolphins programs. They state that dolphins do not belong in captivity.

13. The television seris Flipper premiered in 1964 and was nominated for two TV land awards. Flipper was played by five different dolphins.

14. Two black sea bottlenosed dolphins seemed to be exchanging sounds that resembled a conversation, in a recent recording. They took turns producing sounds and never interrupted each other.

15. Dolphin activist constantly have their hands full trying to raise awareness on the dangers to dolphins.

16. Since they breathe by coming up to the surface, it is impossible for them to sleep deep in the ocean and not drown.
