I literally see it all the time "Why are men so ... ", "Why do women do ...", and then there are questions about why people hate either gender and in the comments you can actually see people insulting the opposite gender because they had an experience with one person of that gender. Like a guy might cheat on you, but that doesn't mean every single man on the planet is a cheater. Or if a girl keeps physically abusing you in a relationship, that doesn't mean every woman on Earth is abusive. I've tried to ignore this stupid piece of generalisation but it's making me mad at this point. I'm literally in that "What the f*ck" mood.

And then there are women/men who think they represent the whole gender - "Hahaha I'm a woman/man and I like bad guys/girls so bad guys/girls must be the best hahaha!", completely disregarding the fact that it's subjective and varies massively.

I just find it so silly and demeaning to other people of that gender. Are your brains unable to process that there are millions of women and millions of men (even in the US)? Maybe you should just stop complaining about people of the other gender and reflect on yourself. Because if all you're doing with your life is complain about the opposite gender, you're not achieving anything with it.

The problem people run into is the trap of the personal experience with a limited ability to put themselves in other situations outside of their own scope and feelings.

They have the experience, form an opinion, and all other experiences are subsequently painted with that opinion.

Like, say a man has been cheated on by a woman before. He enters his next relationship having concerns that his girlfriend will cheat, possibly driving her to leave him for someone else. Now, as this cycle goes on, and suddenly, every woman is a cheating whore.

Note, I am not saying the man is at fault in my hypothetical scenario, but I am suggesting we can have a certain influence by self-actualizing.

It's very difficult to take away our experiences and remove our emotions to acknowledge the fact that no matter how many times you've seen or heard something doesn't mean the world is black and white.

Like me, being a progressive feminist, can acknowledge that there is the presence of patriarchy in our world. HOWEVER, I don't think all men are bigots, evil, or even trying to necessarily perpetuate this intentionally. Or even that men don't have their own gender-specific struggles.

I fully agree. It's not that the experience itself is a bad thing, because it does help improve your judgement, but don't let it get to your perception of the other gender.

I have no problem with these sorts of comments or questions when worded like "Why are men so... ", "Why do women do..." because they don't necessarily mean all men or women. But I do take issue with "all men/women" or even "most men/women" because it's rarely true and tends to perpetuate inaccurate stereotypes.

But in the end this is Girls Ask Guys, which is a place for discussions, questions, complaints and rants about the opposite gender.

People do this because the behavior of men and women is very different. Gender is a grouping variable.

To a certain extent yes. But that doesn't mean every man is the same, or woman. I'm fine with it if it's a genuine question for a certain group of men or women but if it conveys toxicity or makes disparaging remarks it's just not something you should do.
