Is the term "hot mess" an insult? A girl I haven't seen in a while said I look like a hot mess?

I sat next to her in class last fall as a college freshmen. This semester I saw her for the first time since and I approached her and we caught up. I look a little scruffy and have a beard and my hair is longer and she asked if I've been having fun. I told her ya and then as we said by she said "get some sleep you look like a hot mess" and smiled. I didn't know if she insulted me or not.

A hot mess is very much so an insult, but she was probably just teasing you because you didn't look as well put together as you usually do. Unless she was using it in her own way meaning you look hot but in a messy way

I don't know it was weird cause she smiled when she said it so I didn't know how to take it. I was hung over but I don't know if i t was that or I got to lose the beard. In sort of like the beard to be honest.

A "hot mess" is an insult because it basically means "fresh poop". If you look closely at fresh poop, it is steamy as it just came out of a persons innards.
