"Little black dress" encompasses a lot. It can encompass a skimpy dress, but I've also seen the term used to describe a simple full-length gown. One definition I saw refers not to the length, but to the simplicity. Something really skimpy isn't terribly interesting, but an otherwise conservative below the knee wrap dress that opens high up the thigh when walking or dancing drives me crazy. Opening to the top of the thigh is like drawing 21 playing blackjack, but going above that into wardrobe malfunction territory (showing underwear other than maybe a slip, just to vary things up a bit) is like drawing 22.

I've coined a term "giftwrap dress" for another kind of LBD that I like; it specifically refers to a sleeveless (with not too narrow straps) or cap sleeve, deep (but not too deep) V-neck, unadorned form-fitting ("bodycon" is the term?) black dress somewhere between knee and maybe 4-5" above. The term refers to using it to gift wrap one's body.
