Are Europeans more open minded and liberal than Americans?
Also an average European is more likely to be an atheist than an average American.
Even when it comes to marriage, Europeans marry less as compared to Americans and most have "living in relationships" or just live alone...
Also they have a more "free" society as compared to Americans where one can easily avail prostitution facilities without being judged, gay marriages, etc

Why, I have no idea really. But if you look at the history of America, we were a bunch of religious nutjobs who slaughtered Natives, stole their land because "God said we could", enslaved a race of people because "God said we could", and oppressed women because "God said we could."
Now we've got people who against gay marriage because "God said no" and abortion because "God said no." And we've got this sense of pride because we are literally taught in school that we're the best country in the entire world and no one is as free as us and we are the voice of reason in this world.
When in reality we're still a bunch of ethnocentric pricks who are less educated than most Europeans who want the entire world to look up to us and follow suit yet we as a nation can't be bothered to learn about other cultures; rather, we except English and American customs to be taught in every foreign home...

At least that's how a large number of people think.

The Portuguese enslaved Africans hundreds of years before the American Revolution, 60+ percent of the Native population had already been wiped out from diseases contracted from explorers and fishermen who had travelled there before, and women were oppressed in EVERY culture.

We also didn't do any of these things "because God said so". Africans were enslaved because they could be, any race that wasn't white was genuinely considered inferior, true racism. The first "Americans" to try to settle here didn't just drop anchor and start killing Natives, it was a gradual thing where tensions on both sides grew and eventually lead to what happened, then once we were done any Natives that were left were allowed to have land and we educated them on how to be self-sufficient in what passed for modern technology at the time. As for women, do some research on Victorian England.

I did NOT say Americans went seeking slaves because God came down from the heavens and said so. But they JUSTIFIED, key word JUSTIFIED the keeping of slaves, RELIGIOUSLY. They also justified the murder of Natives religiously. No matter how many died of disease, Americans did IN FACT murder Natives. That cannot be denied. And they justified it. Yes women have always been oppressed but the Bible condones this and thus, it was justified. Did my entire point fly over your head?

The only one of your points that is even remotely correct is that we killed Native Americans, but it wasn't because "God said we could", it was because over time tensions built up and eventually reached a tipping point, like many wars throughout history. The Pilgrims didn't just land in Plymouth and say "Hey, God sent us to kill you and take your land so... See you on the other side" and then start shooting like you imply.

Again, it was not God that was used to justify slavery, it was the genuine belief that if you weren't white, you were inferior. Nobody went into Africa, found black people and said "hey, God said I can enslave you, so let's go", they went into Africa, found some black people and said "you're inferior to me, so you're going to be my slave, lets go". There was no justification other than the belief of being superior, nobody ever went to a slave and said "you know, this isn't personal, it's just that God wills it".

Yes, here in Switzerland a lot of students earn extra money through that, I think it's sick!
Here almost everything is legal at 16 expect driving. So people at 15 or 16 can get drunk, clubbing and all that stuff.

Yes and no, I come come up with examples that Europeans are not as open minded as Americans:
-Possession of Firearms (Switzerland is an exception)
-Choosing your own path in life, some European countries will place you in a specific education/work program based on how well you do on a test
-Voluntary Military service, some european countries make you join the military if you're a male and 16-18. In the US, this would be seen as a violation of your freedoms

I'm sure there are more, but those are the one I thought of. I think the reason the US is so religiously and conseravtive is because of it's Puritan background. Even with European immigrants and immigrants from other places around the world, there's still a very big Protestant and conservative mindset. Here in the Bible Belt, I can say that it is not an open minded place. I have been literally told that my Christian denomination was evil and I'd burn in Hell since it wasn't their religion.

Most European countries have their citizens so dependent on government they can't even wipe their own ass, once Germany stops giving out money, whether it be by choice or because they have none left to give, that entire continent will fall into chaos. Add to that the fact that in some European countries they've done some serious rolling back of free speech and other rights, you have to have a really demented idea of what "freedom" is to think Europe is more free than America.

We have freedom of speech, and have the right to say what we want! But we do have to be careful with using your free speech. We had an artist who painted a picture of Allah, and the middle east went crazy! The news paper who brought the picture, is still highly secured because of terror threats. And in 2010 (several years after the pictures where out) a man with an ax broke in the the artists home - While his granddaughter was there. We have to be careful, it's fucking sad but true.
We also pay a lot to the government yes, but we only do so so we can get benefits like free hospitals, or safety nets if we get fired, sick, pregnant or can't work. Some people are just sucking the money out like leaches, sitting on their asses expecting money to come, and we should do something about that! But nothing is ever 100% good.

So how many times have taxes been raised since you implemented your socialist system? Governments raise taxes for a reason, they need to pay for their programs. In the future your taxes will be raised again, and again, and again until eventually consumer spending is negatively impacted to a point of hurting your economy, but taxes will still need to go up to maintain the system. So you'll be left with two choices, either scrap the system or raise taxes again and plunge your economy into the abyss.

This is the fundamental flaw of socialism, it works great, until you run out of everybody else's money.

You can't really compare because real "Americans" have all been assimilated in American culture. there's only a few American cultures compared to the many European, so you can't really compare unless you pick a specific one, like French and NE US culture.

Norway is among the most secularized countries in the west, and among the countries that have progressed the furthest in the world (also we're one of the best countries to live in). Here the only ones crying and moaning about gay marriage are the very conservative christians. The rest think it's perfectly fine. Same goes for abortion; it's seen as something that's basically a human right. Nobody burns aboriton clinics or send death threats to the taff (that does happen in usa).

So thus it seems that religion (or at least conservative religion) is slowing down the progress of society.

There is some truth to that but it really depends on which country and which region of each country. The bible belt, older people and many southern people seem to be close minded and religious which makes them close minded and hateful. These people are a dying breed but the past year or two republicans have spend billions on hate propaganda and it has paid off for them sadly. Also people tend to be followers. Many people believe they don't want united health care because they think many others don't want it. People like John Boehner have been speaking for the American public and the dumb uneducated sheep have jumped on board. It works well for them as they continue to plunder and steal from the American public. Keeping the American public stupid with our schools is working well for them. People should check out the curriculum of Christian academies in the south. I tutored a girl many years ago with her studies. She was doing 4th grade work and was 16 years old.

I lived in Paris for 1 year and a half, 3 month in Germany. I don't think Europeans are that open minded. I had such a hard time. However, the law registrations are progressive because the law is tightly monitoring crooks and corruption. American politics are all about money.

So, the only figure that actually matters is the overall murder rate. By that measure, the USA is quite a way down the list, though higher than many, though not all, European countries, as are, by the way, many other American countries, including American countries with very strict gun laws. This suggests that it's a cultural problem, stemming from the frontier spirit that built that the countries of the Americas. But, I suspect it's also to do with the war on drugs, which causes so much havoc throughout the Americas. Drugs should be legalized, by the way.

The shootings you hear about on the news in the US always happen in what we call "gun free zones" which are places those who are legally licensed to carry firearms for self-defense are not allowed to actually do so. Of course, it doesn't help that in America we refuse to incarcerate criminals, we also refuse to get our mentally disturbed the help they need.

Legal prostitution is a liberal idea and is at it's core something a free society should have. I'm not a liberal, but many liberal ideas make sense. Drugs should be legalized. Sex for money should be legalized. Neither is any business of the government. So he's right to use that as an example of a free society.

It's a very trivial issue and I think it's quite ridiculous to say it's a major sign of a free country. Instead of mention free speech, freedom of religion, marriage equality, universal healthcare, free education, social mobility, abortion or extensive welfare, all of which are clear and proven signs of a free country and in all of which Europe outperforms us, you choose to go for prostitution and that just baffles me. I mean what is wrong with people?

liberals in Germany are more for a Scandinavian model on the issue while conservatives like it the way it is. In the Uk restrictions on the existing law have been passed equally by conservative and liberal governments. In Australian territories the stand is fairly mixed, but there also is a trend of more liberals wanting to impose restrictions and stricter laws on it. I feel Australia doesn't really know what it wants, literally every review they publish underlines that the current law isn't working so attempt to make changes, which also don't work

But point is, don't look at the U. S. and assume that's how it is everywhere

I wouldn't call it a major sign, but the end game. In a free society it should be legal. The problems that arise from it could be solved by legalizing it. Requiring registration and licensing and making it a legitimate business so that the prostitutes are protected under the law and a brothel will only be shut down if drugs/under aged girls are found. Which would quickly become apparent even with a fake I. D. if you take away the benefit of having prostitutes that are minors while penalizing them for hiring them in their brothel it will make the owner weary and force him to be sure she's of age. No society in the world does that right now because they don't care. Some countries legalize it but they don't call for licensing

The alternative which is what we have now is the idea that we shouldn't allow it to be legal, because some people will/would break the law. That's the same as saying we shouldn't be allowed to have cars because some people would use it to run people over or to get away in a store robbery.

So that's how the facts are, but I don't want to argue about because I find people that people who are dead set on legalizing it don't care about the evidence.
The Scandinavian model by the way offers all the benefits of what you stated without the negative side effect of legalizing it

Honestly though, I think if you think some of your points through and compare it to what the legal situation is in those countries, you'll find most of what you said to be completely irrelevant

Well my point was having licensing, because the no one does that. I'm not saying just legalizing it will be a good thing. I'm saying changing it into something that could work. Not dead set on just legalizing it, because the facts on that are well known. But since no one has done licensing, there's really no stats on that at all. There can't be.

@rjroy3 i agree with you on the liscencing part, it can work if stricter rules are made and punishment is increased for those who disobey them. Like using proper protection, healthcare for prostitutes, minimum age, etc.
And even if it stays illegal, all that happens "underground" in reality and the cases of child trafficking, STDs, etc can be much higher in some underground illegal business. So the better option would be to legalize it and make strict rules on it rather than keeping it illegal which can cause all of those negative effects to happen "secretly"...
