Overall, things are pretty nice. The average person in poverty in the U. S. lives much better than elsewhere in the world. The government--while certainly problematic--isn't outright destructive. There aren't random power outages or sudden huge deficits of food.
It's easy to become accustomed to that lifestyle and take it for granted. It's human nature. If humans discovered the cure for every disease in the world, we would be ecstatic for a while, but eventually we would be no happier than before, and we would start complaining again. The corollary to this is that people who descend into worse conditions adjust to them too, and eventually don't feel much worse off.
Americans are also often told that they have "gun violence problems," "religion problems," "healthcare problems," "environmental problems," "measurement problems," "health problems," etc. When so many outside--and sometimes inside--people are saying such things, it isn't surprising that people will start to think things can be better.
There are still problems that need to be fixed, of course, even if they are not as bad as in many other places.62 Reply
Asker+1 yIt's true that humans will never be satisfied and Ik everyone will always have some problems but still. Regarding financial issues... where's the need to complain?
- +1 y
I agree that it's rather silly. I think, as with other subjects, some people just enjoy saying something to have someone agree with them. People tend to like to complain about things together, and having to pay for something you don't want to pay for is an annoyance that almost everybody knows.
Even so, I think it's healthy for people dissatisfied with their posh lifestyles (especially in America) to take a trip out of country. I know people who get a whole new "high on life" by doing work with people in Africa.

I have a friend from Syria. Right now, her family is divided between three different cities. Her parents and the youngest of her siblings still living with them are contending with food and water shortages and intermittent electricity. Some of her siblings are in Damascus, with the ISIS caliphate stretched out between them and their parents. One of her brothers was sent out of the country to avoid being drafted as a minor into the conflict - everyone is expected to support whichever faction controls the part of the country they happen to live in, meaning she has other relatives who have been conscripted by both the Syrian Arab Army and the Free Syrian Army, fighting each other.
Even this utterly pales in comparison to the stories told by the Yezidis I have been in contact with. Hearing what others are going through really put things in perspective.
So yes, when I hear someone complaining about the price of some commodity or other, I find it really hard to give a shit.41 Reply

+1 yJust because things are more expensive somewhere else doesn't mean they're not still expensive here. I got ONE chance to take the SAT and it took three relatives to pay for it. People are poor here too. We're struggling while wages stay the same and the cost of living keeps rising every year. Gas may be 2$ now but meat and vegetables are expensive now because of the drought.
This is like saying people with bronchitis aren't allowed to complain because they don't have lung cancer. They're still suffering and struggling.
If we can't even complain among ourselves how will we get others to see the problems and help those in need?16 Reply
Asker+1 yIt took three to pay for it. I had to get out and work to pay for my own. Guess what? I can't even eat meat... period. your wages stay the same but your minimum wage is still three times higher than here. Ik everyone complains... if both go to a clinic who would get to see the doctor first? Both are sick but one just has a bit more to complain about

Our wages are higher because the cost of living is higher. I'm not going to play Oppression Olympics with you when you clearly don't want to listen to anyone else and stew in your own righteous misery.
Asker+1 yThen don't... dismiss yourself. Someone lives a very underprivileged life and all of you just say to shut up and live with it. Yk... you're not a very educated woman

Dude, if you can't even parse that the point of my post was that everyone has suffering in their life then I worry for your country's education system. Are you stooping to personal insults because you can't think of anything better or you know I'm right and you're angry?
Asker+1 yI wrote what my electric bill is. That alone should tell you that our cost of living is much higher than yours. Iuunderstand your point. Everyone does have reasons to complain. Some just complain for ccompletely unnecessary things. I hear kids screaming at their parents bc they can't get a new phone. I mean things like that. No reason to complain
- +1 y
Not even an apology... nope done. Have fun with your underprivileged privilege.
Everyone complains. That's part of human nature. I'm sure there are plenty of people who would wonder why you're complaining, as well. The fact that you have those bills, and a means (internet) to protest shows that you have much more than a lot of people. Complaints are based on the perspective of the individual.

Anonymous(25-29)+1 yLOL GAS IS not $2 here, "ghetto" here is actually pretty ghetto, meaning there's usually a lot of crime, minorities, and run down houses and stores. Also there's taxes heavy taxes on a lot of ridiculous things. I don't get why you'd think we have it so easy over here, try living here and you'll see
62 Reply
Asker+1 yOh yeah... currently it's under $2. I've been to your 'ghetto'. Yes it's quite calm. I've lived there for a year
- +1 y
Gas has been under $2 a gallon here since Christmas. We also get tax returns to account for the heavy taxes…and we really do have it easy compared to a lot of places…in most places you don't need to wry about being stabbed if you walk out your front door…I think that's the point that's trying to be made here. The us has it easier than the majority of the world and yes we do things to help other countries, but we do complain a lot because we've grown accustomed to how easy a lot of things are for us. That's just what society has always been like for us most of the time and everyone can be guilty of forgetting that there are people in other places suffering. Please don't take the point I'm trying to get across the wrong way…it's just that there are a lot worse problems than high taxes (which we usually get part of it back).

Take unemployment for example. In the USA the government will assist you for 6 months and then you starve to death.
Then look at Sweden. Even if you're a millionaire the government still pays you social benefit money.
Now let's look at health. In USA if you don't have health insurance and get sick you pretty much just die unless you can pay insanely high medical bills.
Then look at somewhere like Cuba. Even sex changes are free. Sex changes.15 Reply- +1 y
Yes they are. There's extreme wealth in America but there's also extreme poverty and those people are ignored.
Asker+1 yWow... well here you have a job and you still starve to death. At least you get something. If you're unemployed here that's your own problem. You'll get nothing
Asker+1 ySex changes are free really? Didn't know that.
- +1 y
@asker USA is by no means the worst place but it's well down the list of the best.
Where do you live?
It's human nature to complain. Things could always be better, so people complain that they're not.
To my family, any sort of bill over two hundred dollars is a big deal because we can't afford anything more--especially since I'll be going to college in the fall.
My parents and I complain at times because things aren't as good as they used to be in our house. But, at the end of the day, we know things could be worse.
But, that's just one point of view out of millions. Everyone in America has a different story so, really, you can't say that every American has no reason to complain.10 Reply
+1 yPart of it is because wealth in America is very unevenly distributed. So, people complain because there are only a few who are extremely well off, while others aren't when it could be more fair for everyone. Then there are things that others have mentioned. You're right, other countries do have it worse, but that doesn't mean others that have it pretty bad too should just be okay with it when it could be better.

The question mark kinda have that one away lol and anyways, everyone probably has there own reasons. I personally think it's cause a lot of us never bother to go to other countries. We just mostly stay in America. So we forget there is more out there and that we actually have it really good compared to others. It usually isn't because we're just bad people. There are real reasons and I think that was one of the most common.

+1 yAs an American, one thing I will complain about that other industrialized countries have better is our health care system and the fact that it hinges on a persons income. Now Obamacare is a step in the right direction as far as getting everyone access to health care, even with preexisting conditions, but it's still not as good as a universal health care system.
When I was 19, I was in college and working part time and then I broke my wrist, with a temporary insurance plan mind you, and I almost had to drop out of college just to pay off medical bills. I also got turned into collection and had secretaries at doctors office threaten to sue me for not paying right away when I was trying to work with them and negotiate. Now universal health care may have its flaws but the countries with it aren't protesting to switch to private health care. Bottom line is no one should die because they can't afford treatment and no one should go broke because they got sick.00 Reply

I'm not American. Yes other countries are suffering from poverty too, but that doesn't mean that the people in American aren't struggling too. It isn't a competition, it's a fact that there is also a lot of poverty in America, not to mention the highest crime rates anywhere.
Asker+1 yTheir poor people are on tge streets smoking cigarettes everyday... here you'd nevet be able to afford that. Especially since taxes on cigarettes is 300%

It's true that the US is glamorized by television, but most Americans are not in poverty or fraught with great health problems. Actually, people in poverty here--while certainly not living like kings--are quite a lot better off than the middle class of many nations:

@Kinstrome
I always think back to when Oprah opened that girl's school in Nigeria. She first went to "poor" Americans and was asking them what would make their lives better, what they need. She was getting answers like "an iPod," and decided there were better places to focus such efforts. - +1 y
Oh for god's sake have some compassion and humility. Every country is dealing with severe problems in different areas and it is in no way accurate to say that an entire country doesn't have a right to complain.
- +1 y
@shadowlegend
I don't doubt it. But when I see the kinds of things being asked for through, say, the Salvation Army this last year (the family sponsored at my workplace: fifteen year old girl asked for lingerie, boy asked for the latest Grand Theft Auto), compared to the needs in other parts of the world, it seems clear enough who's actually worse off. - +1 y
That's nothing to do with who is worse off, that is about the child and what they have grown up with. Kids in third-world countries don't know what an ipod is or even a bike but a kid in American is exposed to marketing and advertising all the time, but both kids may go without food and shelter.
Asker+1 yI agree... generalisation is wrong and I shouldn't do it... ok I'm talking about the ones that do
Asker+1 yThey're poor... Not cavemen. Who doesn't know what a video game is?
- +1 y
Kids in third-world countries. Do you not know what that means? They aren't standing out the front of shop windows hoping someone buys them a game, most of then have no idea what technology is, they have never heard of a phone or seen a television. They don't live in cities or towns, they live in empty, open spaces.
Asker+1 yI can see you haven't done much travelling. I didn't say they wanted it. They're poor... not cut off from the rest of the world. Technology is everywhere. I think you mean phones and stuff. Yes they might not have those things but that's not the only way to get information. There's word of mouth
- +1 y

+1 yI think you're exaggerating, but have you ever heard of the theory of relativity? It isn't just Americans who are complaining, it is people all around the world. Here's a quote you should take a look at: "You don't have it any better and you don't have it any worse. You're an irreplaceable human soul with your own understanding of what it means to suffer."

Asker+1 yI'm not exaggerating. What those numbers are hard to believe? Ik it's ridiculous. And to top it off we're not paid nearly the same as you for the same jobs. So after bills you're practically broke. That quote isn't true at all. Some people have real problems in this world

I'm not American first of all, and those numbers are most definitely exaggerated and many people in America do have real struggles. Please, stop feeling sorry for yourself, everyone's got their problems, even people in the USA. The theory of relativity is real though, there have been studies proving it.

Exactly some people live with no chance to be at a university. Some have to walk miles just to get to a school.
It's relative. People complain based on the standards there use too. If your gas prices went up 9 dollars and your electricity bill 1500 dollars. Everyone would complain there and the kid that's walking miles to get to a school will say 'well I don't even have a car to put gas in and I use candles for light' why are you complaing about your 9 gas and 1500 electricity bill
Again. It's relative to YOUR surroundings and your standards of living

I live in South East Asia now 30% people is starving. The second larger starving people after africa. I Understand now Why so many poor people? Its because western include US their source of oil, woods, gold, gas, etc.
Beef here is so expensive almost 3x more expensive than in the US. The salary here is 20x lower than the minimum salary in the US. Electricity and gas twice more expensive. Jobless everywhere.
is there Any American here wanna exchange the condition with us?

Anonymous(45 Plus)+1 ySome of your statements are off base and odd but there are valid complaints and when people do not voice opinions and are pleased with the status quo and do not want to make the US a better country it can and would get worse.
