Why do some guys modify their cars so that they are obnoxiously loud and can be heard from a mile away?

I'm sitting in my living room and I hear revving on the main road a block away, and 30 seconds later, I can still hear him even though he's traveled a considerable distance away.

and it's not just the loud engines and mufflers. why do guys put those enormous spoilers on their car and paint their cars garish colors?! it makes the guys who drive them look like jackasses. and also the headlights that aren't white. why do you need green or bright blue or yellow headlights?! and the tacky rims and ground effects. I'm sorry, I'm ranting but it's so annoying when guys think a car that deafens people or one that looks like a circus car is even remotely attractive. I don't get it.

I literally took the time to create an account because I couldn't stand this injustice for car guys. First of all, @ dan_i_am is like 40 years old, so his opinion is irrelevant. Of course he's going to think it's loud. I don't know why all the hate for modifications. Cars are a mans baby, first love. We put our love into it because they are our pride and a representation of us. It's not "compensating" for nothing, you sound like an idiot. That's like saying people who work out an get big are compensating for something because they want to look good, or women who wear a lot of accessories are compensating for something. There are some wanna be car guys who add giant wings and loud exhausts just to make the car look fast, but in actuality its a slow terd, but majority of the car community does it for aesthetics and performance. First off, an exhaust adds excitement to the car, you can hear your engine, you can hear the purr, its beautiful and aggressive. We could care less if you stare or not, we don't modify our cars for you, its for us. Secondly, spoilers do actually have a function, it provides downforce at high speeds so you have more control of the car at high speeds, it also gives your car a faster look. Next, a well done paint job is second to none, they are very expensive and we take pride in being able to afford it, giving our stock car a different appearance so we don't look like every other car, its unique. Next, its not a ground effect its called neon, and its illegal in most states and is rarely done. You mainly see it on Japanese imports anyways. Sounds like you're just getting references from fast and furious. If done right, a lot of girls find these modified cars are sexy. When you hop in my 500hp evo, and get thrown into your seat and accelerate to 60 in just a few seconds, its absolutely thrilling and exciting. It's a bad boy factor. Its living life on edge. And the reason why we dump so much money into it instead of buying a new car, because that defeats the purpose of really making the car our own. Something we built and created, designed it exactly how we like it. Its our pride. There's no pride in just buying a regular ol car. You either get car culture or you don't, but don't insult it if you don't understand it. We take pride in our rides. They're sometimes better than women. They don't nag, they flash a warning light when somethings wrong, you can drive them whenever you want, they're what we want them to be.

My partner's car sounds like a god damn harley. You can hear it coming for miles, he always keeps his car sparkling clean, and it's fast as hell. Granted, it's a 1997 Mitsubishi 3000GT, and it's fast as hell.

Fast car, nice cars, they're all forms of peacocking. Basically saying, "This is what I can offer you."

Come on, if you were to meet a guy with a beat up POS that hardly works, you wouldn't be as interested as you would with the guy with the brand new Lambo or Porshe. Cars to men are like manes on a lion or feathers on a peacock, they attract women. Or they think they attract women.

Everyone has their perceptions of what they want. You are peaceful and tranquil (You like things that aren't so annoying as these cars). The guys that you are referring to, like their toys and having them pronounced throughout town.

Some people make mistakes when buying parts. Others- intentionally buy the parts knowing they look retarded, or that the part is obnoxiously loud.

Guys usually buy such expensive cars or modify their cars because of women. Take the words of Dave Chappelle for instance...

"The woman is the prey. And the car is the bait."

Now while this might not always be the case for all women, this is one of the biggest reasons why men modify their cars or spend a fortune on one.

from what it sounds most of those people are what many people call "ricers" and for the most part they are just complete idiots, and think that by doing those stupid things, they will make their car really fast, and be able to beat almost any other car.

although, if its an old car, especially from the muscle car era, it is a little more expected, but it usually comes because they hack off their exhaust.

Interestingly, I was just thinking about this myself recently. I agree that it is confusing - I can understand guys fascination with a classic car or something nice, but as you say those cars are just stupid to look at, stupid to hear and generally very ugly. I can only assume that those guys are delusional and actually believe that their cars are attractive to women.

I learned recently that women are attracted to guys that have a powerful car and rev up the engine hard. Women get arroused when they see a man revving his engine hard or loud because it makes the man look strong and powerful.

Because they are loud and can be heard a mile away. Ever been in the profoundest pits of despair with no one to hear you? Well I have. I didn't have the nerve to start revving engines, but some guys do.
