So why do guys like cars that are so loud?

I just went on a road trip with my friend and we noticed a few times cars that were obnoxiously loud. We both thought it was beyond annoying. There's nothing that impressed us more like we couldn't wait to get away from them. What is it about having a loud engine? Plus why do men/guys put so much work into a car when you just really need it from point A to point B? So just out of curiosity why why?

Good question. Both cars and motorcycles. I don't get it. I find it really annoying, too, along with loud, booming sound systems.

When I was in 10th grade, I had a friend who was a military brat. He had an MG convertible, but it was a piece of crap. It had a small engine, a 4 speed shifter on the floor, and a rotten muffler. There were giant holes rusted through the floorboard.
He insisted that it was "full race", whatever that was supposed to mean.

Sitting in it, you were really low to the ground and could see the road between your feet.

When he would accelerate from a stop and go through the gears it was loud.

Between the sound, the wind in your hair, and the road rushing past beneath you, it felt like you were were flying until you looked at the speedometer and realized that you were only going 35 mph. But the sound of that car engine made my friend feel like he was driving a race car.

I'm thinking that some guys think that loud sounds like fast.
Loud volume is also a show of dominance and rebellion.
It's also a form of peacocking. "Hey, babe, my cock is as powerful as my car."

I went through my car phase. America's car culture was booming when I was in my teens and 20s. At some point, I bought a customized 1972 El Camino. The engine loped when idling and growled when on the road, but it wasn't super loud.

I eventually lost interest in fast, flashy cars. Although there are a lot of adults who love the sound of race cars.

From a male's perception: we know loud engine sounds from racing sports, and associate this noise with motor power, acceleration and ''action''.

Where the younger ones ignore that this does not go well with compact cars or motor scooters. They can't afford better, and still seek the image of controlling a street beast.

As for motorbikes - personally, I prefer them a little louder; it's a safety question:

We are often not seen (or are ignored) from a car driver's position. So when they at least HEAR us around, the helmet will not receive scratches so often :)

Why do people go to rock concerts that cause their ear drums to explode? In the old days mufflers restricted the flow of exhaust gases, so this restriction was hated by drag racers, so they ran their cars without mufflers which made them really loud. But drag racing had achieved a cult following and every high school kid had loud cars. Today the loud car mania has remained, and they now have mufflers that are legal and produce a nice throaty roar, but not excessively loud. But new fads start and now they have those annoying fart can mufflers. You go to any car show and you are guaranteed to hear loud cars. Still better than hearing loud cucaracha music from the people across the street. Get the boys together and get the rope!

I have no clue. I'm more about design, power and efficiency. Noise can sound nice sometimes. But I'd also get annoyed. Men seem to love the sound over everything else. Thats always the first thing they mention when you show them a electric vehicle. It's so bizzare. Imagine how annoying Harley's are. Shakes the whole neighborhood. Look at me! I love a car that has a nice exhaust sound. I don't like cars that the whole point is to be loud as possible. Cars can sound amazing and only be slightly louder than a normal one.

In a lot of cases, increased exhaust flow means better efficiency. Better efficiency can mean either less fuel used or more hp.
