Is being called a troll, a compliment or an insult?

I see users call themselves a troll. But sometimes they get offended if called a troll.

In Michigan, if you live in the mitten part of the state, the folks living in the U. P. call you a troll because you live "under" the bridge.

More funny than an insult :p

But yeah speaking in terms of Internet no I'm not offended nor do I find it offensive to call someone a troll. Unless you're speaking specifically on their appearance.

It's much like the term "bitch". Some women like to call themselves "bitchy", but when someone else calls them that, they get offended. Then there are other women who take pride in it and take it as a compliment. Depends on who it's coming from and how intent they are on being trolls.

People "troll" to get a reaction out of someone. So sometimes the term is used loosely. Some will purposefully say things they don't believe for a reaction while others just say things so "out there" that people are having trouble taking the person seriously.

Depends upon your intentions.
If you are trolling then you would like to be called as troll and if you're honest and serious then you won't like that label.

To me harmless trolls are good guys. The give good laugh without REALLY insulting anyone.

Actually it's a misnomer. "Trolling" is a fishing term, and someone who "Trolls" on the internet makes a statement that is garnered at getting attention. Calling someone a "Troll" actually makes no logical sense but like many pop culture phenomena has caught on regardless of it's actual senseless nature.
