I had it once as a kid when we were invited guests. I remember it tasted aweful. I could not chew it, because it tasted so strong. I think the host was disappointed with us.

I have had it and had an experiance like you did. I have also had some good samples. The good meat came from guys who knew how to kill the deer.
A deer has sent glands pads on their knee and as they run through the woods the sent is left on the brush so the other deer know where they have gone. If these glands are not cut off directly after the kill the sent travels through the meat and gives it a nasty taste.
That might be it.. why don't all hunters do that?
Yeah I've had it and it was pretty good I eat it whenever I can by hunting or buying it out of season, but there are two types of deer meat. Which is the uncured kind which is really, really gamy and there is the cured kind which has more of a meat flavor and a more mild herb/gamy taste. But regardless it is quite tasty and pretty healthy for you.
I have cooked and eaten deer meat. It was not chewy or ill tasting. They probably did not cook it properly. It is awesome to cook in a similar fashion as a roast. Even better when you make sandwiches out of the meat and gravy. Add a little swiss or pepper jack cheese and dress it. Yum!
Thank you! 😊
I've tried it once, this guy I worked with made venison jerky and it was really good.
Yes. I don't care for it. Deer jerkey is okay but beef is much better.

I've had it before and loved it.
It's a different flavors than, say, beef, but in my opinion it's more tasty because it's so complex. You just have to be very mindful of not overcooking it, as it's low fat content means that it will dry out more easily than beef (especially grain-fed beef) does.
Yes I have tried it, actually I hunted and shot a buck a couple of years ago. The meat is good, at least to me, others obviously feel differently but it is a pretty gamy, lean meat. But if prepared well the tenderloin is amazing.
Did you like it at first bite or did you learn to like it? I heard venison is an acquired taste.
Maybe it tasted better because it was fresher :) or you removed the scent glands right after kill (someone mentioned it in the comments)?
I like it. It is a little gamey and more full flavoured than beef. Goes well with a full bodied red wine.
Well, I might have liked it more if I was allowed to have it with red wine at age 7 xD
It's game meat, and not very tasty. I'll never pick venison on the menu if other protein is available. Lean and muscular isn't flavorful.
Don't you like poultry and filet mignon for the same reason top?
I ate it when I was a kid. It sounds like somebody didn't know how to cook it. That's a messed up picture by the way.
Did you like it at first bite? Maybe, I don't remember my parents loving it either.
I thought it looks interesting. It survived by the way.
Yeah I liked first bite and every other bite. The 70's were some hard times and one of our relatives shot a deer. Our parents had the deer cut up and packaged into steaks and other cuts. It tasted better to us than steaks. But our parents were also good cooks.
Venison is amazing. It's like beef but slightly softer. Works wonders as a burger. Yummy.
I eat it all the time. It's great.
A lot of people don't know how to prepare it, so that's probably why you didn't like it.
Do you mean the butcher or the cook?
It depends. Out here we all hunt for our deer. A lot of the times, the guy that kills the dear will throw it in the back of his truck and parade it around showing all his friends. That's not good for the meat at all. It's also not good for the meat when you leave it in a cooler for maybe 24 hours. Cut that thing up and get it in a freeze ASAP! The bad taste usually comes from people taking too long to stick the meat in a freezer, it was rotted.
When my did kills a deer he takes it to the nearest place where he can skin it and cut the meat up, then he'll head straight home to put the meat in our freezer.
So most of the time, I'd say the butcher.
😰 I had rotten meat. Deer meat is so rare here, this is probably what happened.
I think I'm not going to have it again unless someone tells me he shot it himself and froze it right away. Even if the butcher cut it right away, there's no way to know how long the hunter paraded his kill around.
LOL very clever solution ^^
Used to eat it all the time growing up.
Did you like it?
