A lion. Because the chances of surviving are like a few percent higher. A lion could pounce at you and, even though highly unlikely, you could avoid that pounce, then turn around and go straight for them before they can react properly and then gauge their eyes out (extreme but what else is there). A gorilla is just going to come up to you and with a swoosh of a hand or a single bite - you're dead. There is and has never been a human alive that could defeat a gorilla - they are multiple times stronger than the biggest and strongest man that has ever lived.

Primates fight different, and I'm not sure how to defeat a Gorilla!! Obviously, it isn't strength, but whit, but because we have such a similar evolutionary path, he has advantages, depending on the 'Battleground'!!

The gorilla does not always attack. There was this story not too long ago about a child fell down from the railings at the zoo and the gorilla just nudged it and eventually walked off with the screamer. Of course there is Dian Fossey, the brave woman who tried to help the gorillas. People can get close to them which is 50/50 if you play your cards right. Same with lions but they have teeth and run really fast. So I'll take my chances with King Kong!.

It said because of the maternal instinct. There have been other zoo attacks cases where Jaguars, bears and all the gnarly toothed animals saw them as a 'treat'. Even domesticated animals can be vicious!.

@SomeGuy37 just a really cheap one for random events. only one my husband could afford right now actually. he bought a mini14 in 556, a ruger 10/22 for me to practice aiming with and then he bought me a.357 for when I'm home alone to protect myself. he's really protective of me. I mostly shoot.38 out of it though. its an eaa windicator.357 in black with a 3 inch barrel. he wants to buy me a bersa thunder 380 so I can carry around a gun with me that's not so big.

10/22 and mini-14s are fun for shooting cans and just having a good time with targets. Do you want to carry, or feel like you need to? I've thought about it, many times, myself, but the laws are so cryptic!! I am assuming you are in the US and Concealed Carry is OK, with the permit where you live.
Do you feel like you need to carry? A.380 isn't much, for stopping, but it is small, and easy to conceal. I would choose a Makarov, 9mm (Eastern-Block, surplus, cheap) as it shoots a 9mm, with more punch than a.380. Maybe a Walther P1 in 9mm. A little bigger, but OK to hold, shoot, but full-power 9mm.
Some professional shooter suggest that a.22 and multiple hits, being able to handle the 'nothing' recoil, and put a second, third, and forth bullet into the assailant, is better than a larger caliber, that maybe is uncomfortable or intimidating, to shoot!!
Tell him you want to go to a range where you can try a bunch of different weapons so you can find the one you can handle and like!!

@SomeGuy37 trust me a 380 is enough. if a person gets shot, they're going to start running. I don't need to kill them. they will either run and get caught at a hospital or die from bleeding. not to mention I can get off 15 rounds of 380 pretty fast into a persons chest. so 380 is enough for me.

It's good that you mention that Gorillas have more intelligence, but you should have thought about using that to your advantage, for with the Gorilla you might have a slightly higher chance of reasoning with it. Perhaps if you can show the Gorilla that you accept its dominance it might not attack you or it might show some pity. You see?

Up to you, but I see far less chance with the king of the jungle, it's far far more difficult for the lion to empathise with you. The gorillas like the chimps are more closely related to humans, and they might understand; you offer them something, and if it happens to be a banana you become instant best friends. hehe
