Why stereotypical nerds are always portrayed as super skinny or as super fat?

Just curious, why they are never portrayed as average weight?

Because it emphasizes that they are deviant that their body type doesn't match society's ideal of how they should look. 'Nerd' when meant as derogatory identify people in that group as divided from acceptable society. The theme behind the insult is accusing the 'nerd' of excess; they like things too much, they are too obsessively interested in something or they study too much, etc. So their body type in stereotypes is shorthand for that; they are 'too' far or 'too' skinny

Good call - I actually never noticed those stereotypes apart from the maybe weedy guy but when you think about it you are right, I just never noticed the fat stereotype that much before.

Because that would make them seem like a normal person and we can't have that. They need to make nerds look like outcasts and losers so that everyone feels above them. This will also reduce the amount of people becoming nerds in our society.

Just think if nerds were portrayed as who they really were, normal people in society, who could we pick on?

To be fair, they often are fat or very skinny. Fat because of the unhealthy lifestyle, very skinny because very skinny kids are often social outcasts in school so they're more likely to become nerds.

I wouldn't say I'm a nerd but I'm pretty fond of video games and play them a lot. Maybe I am a nerd LOL. But I'm more bulky than skinny. So not everyone falls under the stereotype.

In high school me and my friends all played tabletop RPGs (D&D type stuff), but 3 of us were weight lifters, one was skinny, and one was fat.
