You can assume that the 'hypothetical' situation, unless it's one of the really silly ones like what would you do if your girl turned out be a Martian, relates to a situation in the asker's life. Or a potential situation anyway, that is looming in their lives.

  I had this guy ask me questions like would I marry him if it were possible and if I love him or would have a baby with him if he wanted me too. Those are hypothetical questions. It sounds to me that he asked those questions because he porentially would want those things with me. Is that kinda what you mean?

because hypothetical questions can be a simplified version of reality to readily illustrate and/or emphasize the intended 'point' of the question, instead of trying to find an example in reality

  reality is messy, and has a lot of alternatives that allow someone to weasel out of answering based on reality. Hypothetical questions do not. So, a hypothetical question might be "would you rather sleep with me, or that homeless guy over there?" In reality, there are billions of other options, and someone could easily pick among them to avoid answering the question. But this hypothetical question reduces the options to just two.

  He ain't wrong. Something really effective is a normal question followed up with a hypothetical question. The Game of Thrones "Power resides where people think it resides." quote comes to mind.

To see which side people lean more towards. It's to understand people's perspectives to gain more insight into them and the world around them. I actually get kind of annoyed by people who refuse to answer hypothetical questions.
