I did killed dozens of ants as a kid, with all sorts of things, magnifying glass included; It didn't turn me into a psychopath. It wasn't "fun" but it was interesting for the kid I was. It put into perspective the concepts of life and death, made me understand through experiencing that my actions and the elements may harm and cause death, as well as understanding the responsabilities that pair with those actions. You don't experience such things playing on a tablet; plus ants are primitive forms of life without a nervous system evoluated enough for feeling pain nor self-consciousness. So as long as you don't see a child killing or making small animals suffer on purpose (which many adult psycopath did as children) there's nothing to worry about.

If it was MY kid, yes. You have to teach empathy in general, but also common sense:

"Creatures (bugs and such) outside we leave alone... unless it's mosquitoes or gnats trying to bite us and suck our blood."

"Honeybees and ladybugs are useful and necessary for pollination."

"Spiders and dragonflies are good because they eat annoying insects like mosquitoes."

"Bugs indoors are inappropriate and have to be dealt with."

Now, if it's another kid, I inform the parent or guardian. People can be touchy about random adults yelling at their kids (most of the time, rightfully so).

Yes I would stop any kid who tries to kill them on purpose. It's so not cool and it's so cruel. You have to teach kids what's wrong and what's right otherwise their behaviour will get much worse by the time they grow.

Killing animals for fun displays a lack of empathy. Use it as a teaching moment to make sure they realize that ending lives for fun is not acceptable. Ignoring your kid torturing animals is how serial killers are made. Don't ignore them, teach them right from wrong.
