Would it be socially acceptable for a centaur to poop anywhere in the same way it is for a horse? Say, for instance, your centaur neighbor were out trimming his hedge and you were raking leaves. The two of you started chatting, and, while discussing global warming and the late gardening season, your neighbor drops a deuce on the lawn. Would you be offended?

I wouldn't be offended by this and indeed there are many centaurs who are comfortable defecating in front of others. Generally this is not a problem as centaurs tend to be vegans and so their feces are similar to horses and are good manure for the grass or garden.
However most educated, upper class centaurs are more sensitive or self-conscious about openly defecating in front of humans. These centaurs will usually go to a designated area where they can defecate more discretely. Some years ago I lived next to a very amicable centaur, and he had a little spot in the corner of his backyard that he screened off where he and his family would defecate. Every month his brother would come over and shovel the manure into bags and sell it to a plant nursery.

If they are as intelligent as any human centaurs should be able to control when to poop or not to poop and therefore must have the same rules humans have about pooping.

Other different thing is if centaur really have a physical or mental disability that makes too hard to control sphincters.
