What would you do if you had a smelly student?

Let's say you are a 6th grade PE teacher and you teach boys PE. There's a boy in your class named Jerry who is a nice kid but he smells like shit and sweat. A few kids commented on his smell and when you walked towards Jerry you could smell him

Once, there was a cow farming family in my neighbourhood. The little son loved helping his Dad - and of course caught some smell... of which he wasn't aware of.
It was a really nice kid...
What I'd do?
First: find the actual reason for the 'smell'.
Later on: Seek a 'private' conversation with the boy or/and the parents and make him/them aware that others are affected by it - find, or suggest a solution to improve.

I'd hold my nose and ask him how often he showers or changes his clothes. I'd ask him about his parents and if they keep the house clean. I'd want to know why he smells so bad. But if he does, and he will continue to... I'm sorry but he'd be disrupting class and I can't have that.

He says he showers everyday and smiles. The next day he smelled better, but you noticed that he was walking funny, sweating, constently sayng that he needs to sit down and he can't play. then he screams that he can't and grabs himself between his legs.

a few students told you that Jerry stinks, he touches his privite area and walks funny. One student sugguested he kill himself but Jerry ignored him but he was still sweating

Either kid has home problems or hygiene problems. Not right by any means but it does happen. If you want to help him buy him some hygiene products and excuse him early from class to go shower and change. Also needs his own PE outfit so his normal clothes dont reek after class in other classes.

after reading some of the comments it sounds like his laundry (dirty clothes) aren't being washed either by him or his parents or his caretakers. All of this sounds rather odd I would have a long discussion with his parents or caretaker and if things don't change talk to the principal and superintendent and have them meet with his parents and/or caretakers and if the problem still persists call child services or protective services and have them investigate. but do one step at a time before jumping to any conclusions first

One day you saw Jerry being bullied by a group of kids then he started laughing then grabbed one of the kids by the neck, pushing him against the wall, he was smiling but his eyes looked dull.

Dont worry, Jerry is fake. But he does grow up to become a drug addict and he kill someone at 16.

So, what would you do if you were a pe teacher and you saw Jerry pulling one of his bullies into a corner with empty eyes and talking about strangling them silly?

Report it to my superiors until it reaches someone with the proper pay grade to do their job. In many school systems there's little or no hope for kids with problems. Americans talk the talk but do nothing. Seen that my entire life.

One time is no times. If it keeps happening I'll privately inform him. Given 6th grade probably means he isn't in charge of his own laundry I'd also look into what I or the school could do to help out in case the problem isn't him personally.

Then we're back to figuring out the root cause. Since it might involve his situation at home, be it financial or the care he receives its a pretty sensitive topic. I'll just have to ask and go from there. Voicing whatever solutions my initial research lead to.

a week later, you notice that Jerry is walking funny and he says he wants to sit down for a bit.

This is quite the interactive story is it not!

At this point it us beyond what I as a P. E teacher should be dealing with and I'll make certain to, outside of offering my own concern and support also introduce Jerry to more suitable staff. Whether that is social services, a guidance councilor, doctor or whatever else. I believe that ends my involvement as the main person. While that doesn't mean I wash my hands off little Jerry that does it for me.

Being able to find and provide answers and solutions is important. Being able to recognize when you are no longer the best person for that job is equally important.
