I don’t think my dog loves me anymore?

Ok so I have a female dog, Nikki. i’ve had her for seven years. She has always been the princess, get a lot of attention, and gets whatever she wants. We’ve always thought about getting a second dog, mainly for her benefit. So a month ago we got a male dog, Kodah. He is very sweet, respects her, and respects her space (sometimes). When we got him Nikki would NOT be in the same room as him. I don’t think it’s cause she’s scared i think it’s just cause she hates him. If he would try and lay next to her her fur would stick up and she would dart out if the room. I noticed that she glares at me all the time now. She no longer cuddles with me (which she used to do all the time!) when she comes to greet me at the door if Kodah comes she runs away. She’s just so distant from me and i miss her. is it normal? will she get over it? how do i fix it? HELP!!

She’s uncomfortable with the new dog.

They may never become best buds but they can become good housemates and get along without stress. There are a few things you need to do

1). Take them on long walks together, walking, running fetching any activity that they can do together that doesn’t require interaction.

2) take treats on your walk and make sure they are associating the walking and exercise with fun and goodness.


3). Make sure they have their own food bowls and that they don’t interfere with each other at eating time and make sure they don’t squabble over things like favored sleeping spots toys etc

4) make sure they both know who the boss is. The boss is you. You aren’t their buddy or bestie you’re the leader of the pack.

You get them to behave like they are a pack when you are the leader o f the pack they don’t have to decide who is. Runs and walks... dogs generally love this that’s what they do and the sooner you get them doing this stuff together the sooner they accept they are together as a pack.

She is extremely uncomfortable with another dog being in what she knew as her house, her territory. Not all dogs are suited to live in multi-dog homes, and whenever that is the case then the kindest thing to do is unfortunately to rehome one of them. You could try giving them both treats in the same room, trading their blankets or beds so that Nikki can get used to his scent being around more.

Making sure they're both rewarded for being in each others company is a good way to attempt to get her comfortable with him being there. I hope it helps, but if it doesn't please dont continue to stress her out. She might feel resentment, even.

She's just jealous. You basically allowed another dog to invade her territory and she feels threatened. She still loves you but is probably very hurt. You need to associate the other dog with pleasure. Eventually things will go back to being normal.

She's angry at you. She's feeling jealous. It happens and completely normal. All you have to do is to make her normal and special again. Spend some alone time with her.
