Q: Do you play?
A: Yes, occasionally.
Q: How long have you played?
A: Since my father taught me in 1967. I was a bit into it in the early 1970s.
Q: Would you be interested in playing against me?
A: No. This is nothing against you. Since I was a tween, I have never been very comfortable with any form of competition because sportsmanship is unnatural. That is, "Being a good sport" if you lose is unnatural. I don't like to lose. I don't like to make people lose. When there is a game in which some win and some lose, that means that the loser is going to feel worse - angry, sad, whatever. So, in the sense of economics, such games are Pareto Optimal - the only one one can feel better is if someone else feels worse. So, I avoid playing anything in which I know the other person. BUT, I will play machines. I don't feel so bad losing to machines and, when I defeat machines, I know the machine isn't going to be upset. That said, I do play a phone app game which does have a player-vs-player mode. But I am playing random people from all over the world. I have played one person who is on my team twice. She has beaten me once and we tied once. I didn't feel so bad losing to her because she had certain scoring privileges that I had not yet earned. Still, I'd rather not play her because I know her.
If do play Chess as 247chess. com.
However, even the Expert mode isn't very good. The 247 games deliberately make bad moves to throw games - or the coders are really stupid.
I sometimes play Mate-In-3 puzzles.

Anyway, like Bobby Fisher, I came to realize that Chess is basically a giant game of pattern detection. It's like being an actor doing a script. If you are an actor who can memorize many many scripts, you become a great actor.
This is one reason why I moved over to Backgammon. As much analysis and intellect goes into Chess, a comparable analysis goes into Backgammon but Backgammon has probabilistic elements to it because of the dice. That makes Backgammon more like the real world than Chess... more like warfare than Chess.
I play at 247backgammon. com a lot, but, again, even Expert mode plays stupidly at the end.
B T W, if you are into Chess, consider finding a copy of "The Blue Book of Charts to Winning Chess". I loaned it to a friend 40 years ago and he never gave it back.
