What do you think about gender roles? How strongly do they affect your thinking?

While a lot of us can easily answer this question, in one or two sentences, there is a lot more to gender roles and how they affect our way of thinking.

There is a test by PsychologyToday that has 130 questions designed to determine how strongly you support or oppose gender roles, and based on your answers you will get a final score.

I got a score of 84. (100 being most opposed to gender roles, and 0 being most supportive of gender roles)

We’ve been conditioned to see gender in almost everything. It makes sense for some things but overall it’s overused and mentally stunting. This color is for girls, these toys are for boys. Men dress like this, girls should keep their hair long. A man can’t be soft spoken and sensitive without being seen as weak, a woman can’t be strong and boisterous without coming off masculine. Gender roles is us allowing the world to control what happens in our own realities. Hell I’ve known men to steer clear of certain foods/ drinks because it’ll make them look feminine. How crazy is that?

Gender rolls are natural biological preferences or predisposition towards different kinds of tasks. They're built into the our neurobiology and hormonal systems. There are exceptions, but most people fit the traditional rolls very well.

And what's more, it seems the more you oppose gender rolls, the more strongly they appear. As an example, in Scandinavia more has been done to promote gender neutrality than anywhere else in the world. And yet Scandinavia is also the western region where traditional gender rolls are the most prominent.

I don't think gender rolls should be forced upon anyone. But at the same time, you shouldn't feel ashamed for embodying traditional gender rolls.

I don't care too much about gender roles.
I just do whatever I feel like doing.
My little brother is also a bit feminine and we also let him be whatever he wants, he is 11 and he enjoys watching me do my make up, he likes to do mine and he sometimes asks me to do mine.
We don't care, make up is seen as feminine, but at the end of the day it is just pigments that wash off. Who cares.
But he also likes cars, gaming and trucks.
It is interesting, we will see what happens.
