Why does it seem to be considered manly to smoke or drink?

I do not smoke and never will, and I will never be a guy to drink heavily either, but am not opposed to having a beer or two or have a fancy alcoholic drink with a nice meal every once in a while, but there seems to be a huge trend in women being attracted to guys that smoke regularly or that really enjoy slamming a few beers on a regular basis.

Is this deemed more "manly" by society's standards, and because I don't smoke and I'm a responsible drinker, does this make me "less of a man"?

That doesn't really make sense... not all women like smokers and heavy drinkers, in fact generally a woman who herself is a smoker or a heavy drinker will be attracted to those kind of guys of course, but women who do not smoke or drink are naturally attracted to guys who do not smoke or drink. Simple. And there are women who absolutely despise the smell of cigarettes, just sayin.

Women who do these things like being with guys who will be their "partner in crime" so to speak. They aren't attracted to the guy BECAUSE drinking/smoking makes him manly, its a "common interest" so to speak. There are plenty of girls who don't, though.

I know a lot of girls drink. I honestly don't mind that, being more lenient on it myself, but smoking just turns me off, and I'd be surprised if a bunch of the kind of women I'm referring to, smoked honestly...

I don't smoke, but about 60% of my friends do. You'd be surprised how many young women smoke. It keeps you from overeating/gives you something to do instead of snack.

ALTHOUGH, my problems are still there when I wake up. Besides, if a woman doesn't like you because you don't drink heavily, she's probably a f***ing whore who expects drunk sex.

That's true, but with the way things actually operate in the world, it's as if people only devote their attention to people that are into smoking, drugs, and drinking. It's just something I've noticed. I don't seem to get too much respect, or any real sort of positive sexual attention.

Because those are traditionally things only men did, it wasn't until the 1920s that women started smoking & drinking. Also those things are signs of a bad boy, & we all know women like their bad boys. I personally find both to be a turn off.

i think you're right on the money, I just wonder why a lot of girls, especially more prettier girls, don't find these things turnoffs. instead they seem to be turn ons for some reason. it probably doesn't help that smoking and drinking is all over our pop culture either. I honestly wish more people had a mind of their own and could see past the media. and we're taught in school, even elsewhere; church, at home, that these things are bad and unhealthy, but people go out and do them anyway.

smoking makes you manly cause the men who first smoked were manly,so their manliness was transferred on to that habit,that's my theory anyways.but nowadays people know that it's bad for you,so if anything I would think less of you if you smoked

I know that, but there seems to be women where I get the impression that they don't smoke, yet their boyfriends do, or they aren't turned off by it for some reason. I don't know I just personally think it's gross to smoke so I don't get how some women want to be with guys like that, given that being a guy that doesn't smoke, I don't want a girl that does.
