Here's a QUIZ for you. Using the alphabet (ABCs, A-Z), try to name one country (as recognized by the United Nations) for each letter of the alphabet. How many can you name? No cheating please... no Google, Wikipedia, etc.

If you post an opinion, please don't list the countries, just describe how many you can name and why you can name them.

I can name a country for all 26 letters A-Z

I can name more than 20 countries, one per letter A-Z

Interesting results... Most responders are pretty knowledgeable about countries, but...

People who said they got all 26 cannot be right. There is no country that starts with W or X, so the best you can do is 24. (Some people pointed out that Wales is a country, but it's not recognized as such by the UN, it's part of the United Kingdom, which the UN does recognize.)

Either I need to I drive my communications skills, or people don't read. Why list the countries?

I did a test like this before. Online. Type in the countries. I can name up to 100-110 countries off the top of my head. Only the African and Central American countries were hard. And a few in the Middle East no one cares about, like Yemen and Qatar. Considering there's only a little under 200 countries in the world and I don't regularly study geography, getting more than half of them is good, in my opinion.

America/Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Jordan, Kuwait/Kenya, Lithuania, Mongolia/Madagascar, New Zealand/Norway, Oman, Philippines, Qatar, Russia, South Korea, Turkey, Uganda/USA, Venezuela, Wales, MeXico, Yemen, Zimbabwe.

The only two hard ones are Oman and Wales, because who the f*ck knows Oman exists (it's in the Middle East and is known for nothing), and many people don't know that Wales is its own country and not just part of England.

So yeah, I got 24 completely on my own. Oman was the only one I forgot existed, and Wales I knew about, but had to make sure it was an actual country. And I always use Mexico or Luxemburg to count "X."

And there is only one country in the world that states with O and Y can you name them without google?

W is particularly hard, it depends on what you consider qualifies as country or not.

Ooo - now I have the O!!! Thanks! And I didn't think of that Y - mine was in Europe but I didn't remember much about it other than the name. So I just now looked up "my" Y country - and it's not a country anymore! So.. now I only got 22. :(

@SweetFyter For W I was thinking of a old country as well, but then there is some debate about wither you consider a country a country if it is not self governing or an independent sovereign state... but I stand my choice. I got to X and was stymied... I google it and there was a good reason for my inability to answer it. I served in the Middle East so O and Y were not a problem for me.

Yes - as soon as I saw @AviatorTom mention the Arabian Peninsula, I remembered both the O and the Y. That's what made me go and double-check the Y that I chose - only to find out it no longer exists. It was gone five years before I was BORN!!! I guess we need to update our geography books here. HA!

24 countries within the rules and 26 using a language with more than 26 letters :D (Danish that is).. In school we sometimes played a game where we had to write down names/words starting with a specific letter in the alphabet for different categories and countries was always one of the categories. And you got more points if no one else had the same country, so I learned about a lot in order to win that game :D
I also played an online game where one had to write down and place all nations on a map in a giving time frame. Eventhough, I was always missing one or two xD the name of the countries are still hidden in my brain somewhere

I have nothing for W or X (since Wales is officially part of the UK). I feel like there might be a "West-somewhere-or-other", but can't think of one (there's an "East Timor", but I don't think "West Timor" is a thing) - or maybe somewhere that starts with a W in its own language (like you could have "Cote D'Ivoire" instead of "Ivory Coast"). Pretty confident there isn't a country whose name begins with an X though.

why do I know them? I've known them since I was a kid... I loved maps, and Geography was one of my favorite subjects

and I still tutor and teach some kids, which includes some geography, so... the familiarity has not gone away

RE update. The UK recognises England, Scotland and Wales as being countries. The UN takes a different view since they are not entirely independent of each other. The official Welsh stance is if you say we're not a country (or worse call us a principality) we come and burn your house down.
