How often do you use emojis/emotes when you are writing anything?

I use them a lot. Some of them show what I can't put into words. I think it never hurts to send someone a 🙂

Fairly often. The thing about writing thoughts is, the reader can't see your body language or hear your tone of voice. Mere words can be misinterpreted. So emojis can help to transmit the attitude you had when you were writing.
I'll often end a sentence with a facial expression or hand gesture emoji or a heart or something. Pictures can sometimes communicate more than words.

I use smiling faces as a shorthand for “I understand that it’s a joke and I laughed.”

Rarely ever. If I'm trying to be funny and it doesn't sound like I am, I'll add a smiley or a wink. If I'm sad about something, I might add a frown. Other than that, pretty much never.
