What is the biggest regret you have?

My greatest regret is the breakup with a particular girlfriend. I was 37 and Petra was 30/31. We virtually lived together for over a year. I wound up loving her with my heart and soul and she loved me. In my eyes, she was perfection. I liked everything about her and the sex was beyond words.

Her childhood had been rough. She was sexually molested by her step father for over 10 years from a very early age. She got married and had a son when she was about 17, then got divorced a few years later. She dealt with alcoholism and the trauma but became the most amazing, bright, plucky woman, determined to succeed in life.

Unfortunately, we were not destined to spend the rest of our lives together. Circumstances forced us to part. It's complicated, but had nothing to do with cheating or any meanness.

Being without her was the most agonizing thing I ever experienced. It took me a year to get myself together. Three years after our breakup, I met my future wife, married her two years later, and we've been happily married now for over 25 years.

Petra had moved out of state to be near her mother and son. About 20 years later, she found me on Facebook and we even spoke a few times. I melted at the sound of her voice. It was a joy to be in touch and to know that she was happy, doing well, and pursuing her dreams. She had never remarried. Then, about five years later, I read that she had passed away from a sudden medical problem at the age of 55. I was devastated. There is a hole in my heart that will never heal.

I still love her and always will. I will never ever forget her.

I don't have many regrets.. but I do wish I could have done some things differently in 2021. It fucked with my mental health. Not revealing anything though.
