Older people can any of y’all tell me about how racial relations were when you were younger?

Obviously I know what I learned in school but I never asked anyone who was actually there.
I’ve heard that it wasn’t actually that bad except for a few places which became the face of everything so is there any primary sources?

My best friends in elementary school were twin boys. The first time I can remember anything racial was when we were 6 years old and one of them was crying because he didn't want to be black. I was so confused and it was the first time I was told we were different in some way that mattered.

Race didn't seem to matter and wasn't even mentioned all the way up through my college years. Then came Obama. Michelle Obama. Many Americans voted for her husband, but she focused on a racial divide from day one.

It's sad really. My closest family friends are black. We see eachother as sisters and brothers in Christ.

Meant to move that last part down. The divide is sad. However, my closest friends have a different color skin than I do and it doesn't matter to us because we love one another.

@TrueConfection If you looked at Michelle Obsma's resume it is nothing but a bunch of useless affirmative action jobs. She is a prime example of the opposite of what MLK wanted.

yes, just before the Obamas bought the mansion on the Vineyard , Michelle saw a little girl looking at her portrait in the White House gallery. she invited the girl up to the White House too meet her. The little girl happened to be black of course. I could not help but think if she was white there would have been no invitation. She is the worst kind of racist.

They were better. When I was in the Airforce in the late 80s I had several friends who were black and we never really made a thing about it.
I worked at a local college for 16 years. I started there in 2001 and in the cafeteria all the kids used to sit together , both black and white. Now, the black kids sit on one side and the white kids sit on the other.

I thought so it seems people are so divided these days and people don’t even want to try to know anyone who doesn’t look like them or come from the same background.
I also think it’s really only a general public thing too, I’ve heard many veterans talk about how close they are with all the guys who were in the same squadrons as them no matter what they looked like
