How much racism have you seen or done yourself? Do you make friends with people other than your race?

I was a small town white kid growing up, and I always realized that there definitely are cultural differences, but they never mattered to me personally. I was of the opinion to celebrate them. I cast a really wide net with the music I enjoy being a guitar player. I was about 15 and hopped the train to Philly to see a band called Parliament. I really dug that band, and still do. I saw right away I was the only white person in the audience, but thought it would probably be okay to just enjoy the music. I was wrong! I heard people saying stuff, but just figured I'd ignore it. As soon as the lights went down for the first song, I saw a bright flash. Someone behind me had smashed a bottle over the back of my head... and I dropped to the floor. I started heading towards the exit and men and women alike took the opportunity to kick me or smash food in my hair. Even the people who didn't... I remember looking at their faces and seeing them smiling as I tried to make my exit. Again, I was just a kid... and I thought the whole time..."Nobody?" Not one person tried to help. So now decades have passed, and I still enjoy the music. I still talk to black people, like on a job site or something. But as far as the trust factor goes, I guess it jaded me a bit for life. I've never let my guard down since then. I've never put myself in a situation like that ever again. I missed out on a lot of other bands I really would have liked to see. I won free tickets of the radio for a band called Living Color who had a hit song Cult of personality and ended up giving them away. Every now and then when I get lost in thought, I can still remember their faces, smiling and laughing.

I grew up in the 1950's and 1960's in the US and of course I have seen racism. I see racism today in the political left and some elements of the far right.

I am Caucasian and I have dated mainly Caucasian women but I have also dated Hispanic, Asian, and American Indian women, and I am engaged to a Chinese-American woman. Does that make me racist?

i grew up as a white girl in east st. louis so i've experienced and seen lots of it. probably done some minor things like without realizing it or i was stupid and young who knows

and yeah idc about race. i just like people who i get along with

I'm white. I went to a predominantly black inner city high school, so yeah, I've experienced racism. My best friend is biracial (black and white). I keep my circle of friends very small, because I can't stand most people, regardless of race.

I've seen some.. Funnily enough almost all of it was from "POCs".. But, I've always wanted to be around more groups than just "my own".. So no.. I try and treat people on an individual basis.. Even though Chicago is a "melting pot" it's still pretty segregated except for a few areas..

and I've seen some racism yes, but not a lot... living at Melting Pot Texas, people just get along for the most part

I don't need or really want friends outside of the ones I already have so to be completely honest I don't really go out of my way to make friends at all
