Why do people who say "im not racist, or "am I racist" and then clearly go on to say something racist?

There is a social expectation to not be racist now. This means that some people that are racist will subconsciously, or consciously, believe they are not racist. However, if somebody is racist depends on more than just our desire.
Our thoughts on race stem from our parents belief, the environment we're raised in, and our education. In certain areas, this is still hard to overcome and many don't even try, or want to try.
It is also unfortunate that humans have a tendency to fight back if they feel attacked. So, when some people feel attacked; culturally, physically, spiritually, etc.; then they lash out and become even more racist than they originally were.

It's like people saying "I don't want to be an asshole, but" then preceding to be an asshole. It's like people think that saying like that makes them less of a racists or asshole. But in reality it just makes it worse because they admitted to being a racists or asshole by saying what by itself would make them an asshole or racists.

Because when you actually are something, you don't have to go round saying it. Eg. Nice people never claim to be nice, beautiful people don't go around telling everybody how pretty they are.

When people claim to be something out loud, they aren't just trying to convince others about who they are. They are also trying to convince themselves.

So racists will quite often say "I'm not racist!!!" to cover up the fact that deep down they know they actually are racist. They are trying to convince themselves and others they aren't

It's just a feel good statement that they think absolves them of any responsibility. It's kind of like "patriotism". I can say "I support the troops" it doesn't cost me anything. Then I can turn around and scam military families. Politicians do it all the time.
