Hold on, now- it's not that simple. Different racial demographics are probably part of it, but only PART; you need to look at local economies, too. How many of the jobs in the more agrarian South are going to require degrees- rather, how many of them are going to require degrees in the pre-G. I. Bill days, when you didn't have every Tom, Dick, and Harry going off to college and causing degree inflation, reducing their value? Obviously, modern transportation and communications tech means there are far more jobs, even in the Deep South, that reasonably call for degrees, but the culture that's been built up by more reasonable socio-economics is going to lay behind that; obviously high diplomas are easier to come by, but the principle is the same.
I'd try to find a graph of G. I. Bill recipients, and see how they overlap. But, too, is only part of the puzzle. Human culture is COMPLICATED.
