They are mourning doves, spelled with a u. You aren’t dense, you didn’t know the correct term but knew the right pronunciation. I have those where I am and they come to my bird feeders all the time. They make these sounds, almost like a purring sound and I guess it’s supposed to sound mournful.

It looks like a dove to me, but most doves I've seen are grey and white. I don't see many of them though. It's been quite a while since I've seen or heard one.
It's an understandable mistake, but I do know how to spell mourning dove.
