A lot of children do not get nutritional meals because they are poor. Plus for the past couple of year's because of COVID they didn't go to school and some didn't have food at home. Maybe they are trying to get the kids healthy again 🤷🏼‍♀️

When I say their food will be free, it will be free to them, the children. Of course it will be taken out of the State taxes.

I agree with these programs in targeted areas. Parents may be on drugs or drunk, or just don't care about their kids beyond the kids bringing in extra welfare $$$ (to be spent on dope or booze). For many such kids, the meals they receive at school may be the only good meals they eat all day.

I do. When I was a kid I was not given lunch from home and my mom refused to pay for lunches so most of the time, if i did indeed get to eat, it was after school.

@worldscolide since I was raised by a single Mom and my father never paid his child support, we were kinda poor. I did qualify for free hot lunch everyday, but I had to have my hand stamped with ink and show my stamped hand to the cashier in front of all my friends and classmates. I was so embarrassed 😞

My mom refused to fill out the paperwork for free lunches. Her reasoning was that I didn't need that much food. Most of my childhood I never ate breakfast or lunch.

Same here. They did that on purpose to humiliate and stigmatize the poor and the kids whose parents were divorced. Now it’s hard to find kids who don’t at least know someone whose parents are divorced.

@worldscolide it must have been awful to know you could have had lunch at school if it weren't for your mother. Her reason doesn't seem right to me. I think it was more like she didn't want people to know you were low income - it was her pride that stopped her from filling out the paperwork. What do you think?

@Sixgunsound you are right, it was quite humiliating. I don't know why they had to do it out in the open where all the kids could see. It wasn't our fault our parents were divorced and my father was an ass.

OnTheLevel California has State tax. That is how these programs are paid for. Not every state charges residents with a State tax, so things cost a lot more for residents in California.

If the food is good and nutritious, it's a great idea. However, it should only be done in schools that are in poor neighborhoods. There's no reason to give kids a free meal in Elementary Schools in Beverly Hills.

Google the homeless lifestyle in San Francisco. Tens of thousands of people, many not originally from California, gravitate there for all the advantages that people get for being homeless In California.

They are packing up their suburban middle class lifestyle and getting a mortgage on a tree in a park in San Francisco, they are figuring out how to get there by any means necessary, generally but not always traveling solo, and there’s no need to leave once they get there.

@FunkyMonkee just because California is expensive to live there doesn't mean a lot of the people aren't poor or low income. What about the people that are native Californian's and have lived there all of their lives then all of a sudden inflation them hard? If they don't have enough money to feed their kids or themselves then they sure as heck don't have the money to move somewhere else. Moving is expensive! Moving is a real hassle too!
And who in the hell would want to move to Texas with the thousands of illegals there now. And since Lake Mead is almost all dried up, Arizona is going to be very strict with water usage, Nevada as well. Seems like almost every state has it's problems.

They seem to concentrate in blue states though. Look at Wyoming: same region, same amount of water, but about as dark red as it gets. The unproductive don’t last long there because the productive aren’t robbed at gunpoint to ‘redistribute’ their hard earned gains.

From what I'm hearing, most Californians are sick of the squalor and the insane governors and mayors and are moving to Mexico and Florida!
If they can't afford to move or buy food, how are they able to pay their school taxes? I don't HAVE any kids but I just had to pay nearly $4,000 in school taxes last month! If that's ALL I use my money for, I'll be flat broke in 6 years!!
And, kids don't always stay the same size and new clothes every few months is not cheap!!

I don't think it's a good idea. First the food they serve will be garbage, it will go mostly into the landfills as trash, and parents should be able to provide lunch for their children.

I think the idea would be better if it was confined to low-income areas or students. I have a real problem with subsidizing anything for people who are already living comfortably and perfectly capable of fending for themselves, especially because doing so is inherently inflationary.
