Any advice on what to do with my cat?

So my cat has developed the desire to be outside or want a lot of attention but won’t let me give him that attention for long. I’ve tried playing with him and nothing. He lays by the back door and meows most of the day. I don’t know what to do now. Any ideas? Also he’s allowed outside but he has to have a leash and harness and I have to get his rabies and flea medicine first.

Try different ways of playing.


Cats are like people and each one has a unique set of preferences.


My cat for example loves to play, but unless you move the toy just right, he runs away from it like it’s trying to murder him. Lol


One toy that all of my cats enjoyed was actually just a pendulum glass crystal hung in the window.


When the sun shined on it, it cast hundreds of tiny rainbows in the room and I would twist the string so it would spin like a disco ball.


The cats had the time of their lives trying to catch the rainbows.

My cat has knocked everything out of windows. I’ve tried playing with him in different ways as well but he’s just not interested in it. He was a lot better when he was younger and I had my other cat. Thanks for the advice. I will be trying again when I’m able to get toys

The pendulum gets hung way too high for a cat to reach. They don’t even seem to notice the pendulum itself, only the rainbows it makes.

But they do have many different toys.

Your cat might like that newer toy that looks like a tiny race car that drags a feather around for the cat to chase.

Your cat might be bored. You can try getting it a lot if interactive toys during the day. Chewy. Com has lots of them. I bought a “flipping fish” for mine and she likes it. It’s a fish that moves its tail upon touch. Other things are rolling balls on a circular encasement where the cat pushes the balls with its paws. Also get him a fuzzy ball and put catnip on it, it will go wild. I let my cats watch cat videos on YouTube. Gets them very intrigued. They love the bird and squirrel ones.
You can take the cat out on a leash daily once if you can, as long as he/she has a flea collar and rabies shot. Nothing wrong with it.

I’ve got him plenty of toys and stuff. I got him a ball that moved when touch but since it had a feather he preferred to carry it. Anything with a feather he plays with but he gets possessive of those toys when he has them like he won’t let anyone take them unless he’s done with them, he’s pull on the wands if he catches it and I mean pull, like he’s acting like a dog that’s playing tug o war. When my other cat was alive he would wrestle with him or he’d play with my dog but then he pounced my mom’s senior dog. I have taken him out and all he’s wanted to do was chase bugs and I’m not able to take him out as much because I started a new job and I also don’t want to risk him getting fleas.

You can take him out intermittently when you can, just be careful and have him wear a flea collar. I have one that has escaped from me in the backyard many times, but she's hard to catch so I don't let her out. My senior cat is 20, and he can't run away, haha.
I think all cats become possessive of their toys when they have them in their paws. Mine do the same with string. If I move it away from them, they go after it. I think yours would like the flipping fish. I got it for about $10.00 on chewy. com or Amazon. But if you can, try the YouTube videos. My cat was engrossed for hours watching, until she fell asleep in the dog's bed.

Once a Cat gets used to being outside it can become feral and not want to come back inside and be an indoor Cat, my opinion is if it wants to go outside put a leash and collar on it.

Maybe there is a female cat nearby in heat (breeding season) and your cat can smell them in the air. That is often the case when they want loose.

I have three large dog runs all put together along the side of my house, it forms a solid unit (with top) accessed by a dog door through the wall. A couple of my cats have liked to go out and enjoy the space. Minus when wildlife is around, then they get called in.

They do make outdoor cat “spaces” too. Try running a search. You could sit with him while he enjoys some time outdoors. I wouldn’t leave him alone though.

well i have to be captain hindsight here... if you didn't want your cat to have an urge to be outside, you shouldn't have let her outside. because once they got a sniff of the freedom, that's not reversible. cats aren't subordinate herd animals like dogs. they won't be happy if all they get outside is a few minutes on a leash. your cat doesn't want your attention. it meows cause it wants you to let it out. so untill you have the medicines ready, it won't change.

Let him go outside once you get his shots, but try putting him on a long leash that is staked or anchored.

It's normal for cats to be outside. Cats don't like being on a leash either. They want to be left alone to hunt.

Set him FREee if he loves you he will return or at least when he gets hungry
