How do you respond to family members who enjoy gossiping about people who aren’t in the room at family functions?

I noticed some family members who seem to enjoy gossiping about other people in their life when those said people aren’t even in the room and I noticed their gossiping usually always almost comes to an awkward point.
Is there anyone else who’s felt the same about gossiping family members and how do you deal with it when they make conversations awkward?

Nothing one gonna is going to work so I stand by the rational side, when they nudge me for my opinion I always seem like I pours cold water on their fiery hearts so yeah, I do prefer they understand how improper it's as grown adults to say what they say.

In my family, the gossipers are at least in their 60’s and there is no possibility that I am going to change their behavior. I just leave the room and don’t engage in the conversation.

I could listen, smile and laugh. I enjoy learning stuff about other people. But if some of the gossip was malicious or I knew it was untrue, I'd have no problem speaking up.

Id tell them to shut up and to knock it off. They probably don't realize people are talking behind their back, so Ids mention that to them.

People who gossip are boring. They have to talk about others’ lives because their own lives are completely uneventful.

I don’t get involved. I hate gossip. I try to change the subject or end the convo as fast as I can.
