How would you handle family members who like to gossip?

Or talk badly about other family members? I'm almost afraid to call sometimes because I always hear..."Have you spoken to so and so (family member) lately? And when I say, yes, I have... later, "Ah, well, I'm not talking to him because he did this..." I'm at the age where this seems senseless and almost childish. What about you--how do you handle unwanted gossip?

That's something I really don't like: gossiping people, whether family members or not. Sure there are different levels, but there's indeed something childish in that phenomenon. In general I try to avoid such people, depending on other character and compatibility traits.

I agree and I hate gossip anywhere, esp among family members. I try to steer away from them but iut's hard with one particular member who always drags something up.

I'm from a BIG family - always something and I kindly ask them to keep me out of their shit. they're adults, I'd they've issues with another family member - they can deal with said family member. I'm not a middle man.

Right now I've an uncle in bad standing, one of my aunt's REALLY wants to bitch over him with me - I simply say no thank you.

The same as I would with anybody who gossips: not trust them with I say.

Family is more complicated unfortunately. There is more leeway to gossip to the point of being natural.

When I talk about other people I usually stick to positive remarks. If it’s negative I will try to change subject unless I need advice on how to handle an imminent problem.

Nice way is not to talk to them. They are spreading rumours and will do the same with whatever you tell them.

But if you want to sow some revenge then start some benign rumours, and watch who says what. Then deny ever saying it, and destroy the credibility of the rumour spreaders.

Sometimes the best thing to do is to ignore or to say you don’t remember if there’s a weird family member that you need to deal with…. better to play stupid then to have a big drama or fight come out of something stupid lol

Usually its one family member who gossips about every other family member. I'm sure this member does the same to me.

you're going about this all wrong and at your age you should know better. you should be more calculating at your age. remember knowledge is power. and in the right (or wrong) hands it can be dangerous a dangerous weapon to use against someone. welcome the unwanted gossip that way you can use that information on the person in the future if they should ever cross you the wrong way you can use that information against them

This is why I mentioned, that at my age I don't want to deal with it. So my question is--how do you deal with it? Why would I have to be more calculating? That's using up my energy I can have for better thoughts.
