Don't go out alone.
Don't wear expensive clothing, carry expensive bags, or wear non-costume jewelry. Don't dress in sophisticated looking outfits. That screams "money" and makes you a target.
If you have a dog, bring it with you.
Avoid going out at night, and if you must, carry a good flashlight.
Do not cower. Walk upright with your shoulders back and looking ahead. Scan the area - keep your head on a swivel. Project confidence, and be prepared to speak with confidence and annoyance.
Don't dilly dally, and stay off your damn phone when you are in the danger zone.
Do not let yourself be distracted. Move with a purpose and get back to safety as quickly as possible.
Keep your vehicle in good working order.
Bring a jacket or keep one in your car.
If you can, keep your car in your garage and do all loading and unloading with the garage door closed. Don't let anyone see what you have or what you are doing.
Most victims of robbery walk around distracted and completely oblivious of the world around them - often lost in their phone, or cower with their heads down. It comes as a complete shock to them, and their behavior makes them a target. Alert, confident people are almost always passed over by criminals, especially if they have nothing obvious of value to steal.

If someone is being robbed, they can just starting sh*tting their pants or literally pissing themselves, then rub their bodily waste all over their chest and arms, while giggling maniacally. 95% of the time, the robber will freak out and leave you alone. ... Unless he's German.
If you're a woman! (Like @annabananna) ... You can just get a gun. Way too many women hate guns when they could be their best friend.
We had that. A group kept walking down the street at night checking all handles vehicles (to see if unlocked) and after a couple months homes too (which is incredibly scary as people are obviously home at night) everyone put up cameras and caught everything, but the police didn’t catch them.
Finally a couple years pass and someone coming out of a liquor store passing a car with people sleeping in the front. The car is jam-packed with stuff. They called the police.
They were arrested as they matched the people on the videos stealing everything.
It was just luck and someone who saw something and listened to their gut and did something. Good on them!!
I just keep the door locked at night. But I live in pretty safe part of town, all the bad stuff happens downtown usually.

Make sure you keep all your windows and doors locked and bolted.
For sliding glass patio doors get a stout long piece of wood or a board and wedge it into the metal frame runner that the glass door is on, so that it can’t move if someone tries to slide the door open.
You can also nail windows closed at the top. It doesn’t take like big nails either, just something to keep the window from sliding up. This of course all depends on how often you use that window.
Make sure you keep hedges and trees limbs trimmed. You don’t want someone to feel as though they can go into or out of the property with concealment.
Those motion detector lights for outside are also good.
This is kind of a weird one, but if there is a bunch of mail sticking out of your mailbox that you haven’t gathered for a few days or if you’re traveling, burglars may see the pile or letters sticking out and think no one is home and they are out of town.
Oh yeah. And make sure you don’t leave bags in your car, stuff like that. I’ve had people literally steal the change out of my car before. If they see anything it could get stolen. I even make sure I put my phone charger up so people don’t see the cables and think there are electronics to steal.
I don’t really live in a bad part of town now, but did in the past. Let’s just say I’ve had my house and car messed with in the past. More than once.
Lock doors at night, have quick access to my gun or blunt object available by my bed, 911 ready and on speaker should they get in so I can call out a description of the intruder. Change up daily routine to keep potential burglars guessing on a pattern. Don't go anywhere at night after a certain time. Stay near crowded areas and in line of sight and light. Plan on getting a guard dog that is prepared to attack intruders on command too.
No need to be quiet when they break in or see you.
@MrOracle said the most good advices. I would also add to walk far from strangers and that if a situation will come, just do as he says (safety first) and give him what he wants and then report the police when you are in a safe area. If it gets physical, using pepper spray and screaming to get others' attention is valid. Rely on instincts and run if you can. If not, hit sensitive areas like groin and eyes. Many videos on YouTube teach bullshit, and even if the technique is valid, it won't transform into muscle memory without proper training. Searching for good martial arts school for self defense (not just a short course) to overcome physical encounters and mental stress during the situation is also smart.
Many years ago I had a $5000 bike. One day riding hone I passed two teens who were smirking and acting suspicious. Short while later my bike was gone from the garage.
Remembering the teens I went at night to their house. Looked in their garage and there was my disassembled bike on cardboard being spray painted.
There was three cars in the driveway. All tires were found slashed the next day. One night the teen got jumped and pummelled by someone. They ended up moving as someone continued to passively harass them daily.
If you mean breaking and entering, that actually usually happens in the day time. You’re at home during the night. They don’t want to risk sneaking around while you’re there.

my house is safe enough...
truth is that I leave near "someone" that would just not tolerate these things happening nor would want police coming around
to these house robberies just won't happen, around here... lol I have excessive locks on the only way to get in. That should slow them down and give me time to pull out and make sure my Walther P-22 and my GLOCK 34 both have one in the chamber so I can two-hand fuck some shit up. The backup plan is the AR-15 and 12 gauge shotgun in the bedroom which can also be locked and provide the 2nd barrier. Basically, I have my first line of defense and then I can retreat to the second... once stuck in the second line it is all-out war.
"Robbed" means one person forcibly taking something from another person. "Burglary" means some breaks into a likely occupied structure.
Don't own any material possessions, or have a good alarm system and some guns, or maybe like have a bunch of baby dolls heads on poles in the yard.
Have motion detector lights outside.
Have a loaded gun in every room of the house.
Stay armed when you leave your house or even when you open the front door. (I don't even go get the mail from my mailbox without being armed.)
I have cameras , A German Shepard and a 40 caliber and a shotgun , Have fun trying to rob me
A larm system, cameras and zero vision gas for the house. I never carry cash on me, i never wear jewelry, my phone is sony. No one wants a sony, it's insured anyways. Be safe
Doors and windows are locked. I have cameras everywhere. If all that fails I live in a Castle Doctrine state so home invaders are not gonna have a good time. Or carjackers for that matter. Not to say violent crime doesn't happen anyway though. Criminals find a way.
I lock my door, that's about all I can do to prevent it.
Although, it would be unlikely that someone broke in to my place. I just live in a one bedroom apartment in a smaller town, so the chances of them thinking that I have much of value is pretty low.
Most valuable would probably be my PC (desktop) or TV (60"), which both is not that easy to just quickly grab.No certain way, but I have cameras, two German Shepherds, a CCW, and am friends with quite a few local officers, many of whom watched me grow up and knw exactly who and who isn't permitted to be here when I am not.
Are you allowed to own and or carry guns where you live? That sometimes deters neighborhood crimes.
We have lots of security cameras, an alarm system, tough locks, proven trust-worthy dogs, various weapons, our skills, etc.
Lock your doors, turn on your porch lights and such so they will be easily seen if they try to approach the house. Owning a gun and knowing how to use one helps.
It sounds like you live in my neighborhood. I put ring cameras all around my house so I can see them and record them. If they try robbing me they will get a taste of neighborhood justice before we call the police
I don't show off what I own and keep a low profile. Never had problems except when (Malaysian) Indians were near.
