  The part that really gets me is I got a unit that specifically had all the appliances lowered, and that is still ridiculously high for some reason. I got rid of my stools before coming because I didn’t think I’d need them 😑

  Captain is right. These door cameras are cheap. My brother has one, and when the camera senses motion, it alerts him on his phone and he can see what's going on in real time. Once I was having dinner with him and he handed me his phone. It was a pack of wild turkey on his lawn. It's a brilliant idea.
  My brother has a house and is an electrical engineer, so he hard wired his camera into his electrical service. Like you, I live in my apartment and so I would probably need a battery powered camera. (and that would be a pain in the ass)
  But I just Googled it, and they make a camera that screws into your porch light socket. Now you don't have to worry about batteries.
  
  I live fairly close to where those four girls were stabbed to death in their sleep. I'm not saying the cameras would have saved them, but at least the police would have been able to bust the killer or killers by now.
