These happen all around the world, often causing huge amounts of damage. So, has one ever happened very close to you?

Builders in the US used to pile up construction material like unused wood, nails, plaster board, trees and tree stumps, paint cans and bury them on a property in the neighborhood. After a while, the ground starts to sink in or a pool is being out in and digging starts which causes more problems than a sink hole.
So one neighbor put in an in-ground pool and found paint cans and even dirty diapers. The government labeled it a toxic waste dump due to the paint cans. He cleaned it up properly but it will always be labeled a previous toxic waste dump. Try selling that type of property. He sued the builder and won. The builder bought back his house.
Then our neighbor saw sinking in her yard. I told her if she opened it up it could be problems. She did and it was a problem. It had now been too long to sue the builder. She spent about $115,000 getting heavy equipment in for months even though they didn't work all the time. It was a very deep and long hole. The heavy equipment ruined her driveway which the company she hired replaced for free. No toxic items like paint cans were “found” because I am pretty sure the construction guys helped her a bit on that score.
Be careful digging if it is a sink hole suspected from building debris. Buy some dirt and plant some flowers.
Interesting tidbit, if you know the F-22 fighter jet, her husband had a major role in designing that jet.
It is and it does happen all over the world it's crazy i hope he can save the boat for when he needs it that is scary and could happen anywhere I believe that our world and the people in it are going to be changing and going through many things like this sooner than later
People live on those boats all year round. According to the news an American couple had just retired on one. It's a major stretch of canal and it's stopping people travelling for Christmas
Yes, they should exist since the soil here is 3km thick mix of river delta loam and sea sand but I've never seen of such extent like this in your pic.
No we are pretty safe from sink holes around here.

I’ve never seen a major sinkhole in person. Some of the footage of sinkholes is terrifying. When i was young, earthquakes were portrayed to be the Earth opening up swallowing whole everything on the surface. Turns out that’s sinkholes! I’d be okay going my whole life without seeing that up close and personal.
That's the third or fourth canal leak in the UK in the past few years.
I've never lived in a sinkhole-prone area, but I have relatives in Florida who have had sinkholes near them. It's a common problem in Florida.
That's going to put 2026 Canal and River Trust fees up.
Just when I was considering buying a narrowboat too...
No but, I had one open up on a spot where I'd been standing about 4 to 8 days before. Right in Downtown!! It just swallowed half a bus!!
Not near me, but there are several former and current mining locations with such problems.
Yes, one road over, missing houses by metres. There's one past the bottom of our garden. We live in an old coal mining area, and there used to be hundreds of illegal mines where people would dig up coal a bucketful at a time.
no that’s never happened but when the rain fills it up, it’s a nice spot to go for a nice dip
No I do have a hole in the sink to let the water out and also one was in the basin that also let the water out which was annoying when you're trying to wash the dishes
Yes, when I got married we had the reception at my father in law's house. A huge sink hole opened up right in front of the house. It was even on the video.
Trump came to speak at a rally in my hometown once. Does that count?
Nope, that is something I've never seen firsthand.
Some people are saying it's not a sink hole. They're saying the canal broke.
No, saw a video of this the other night, so much for the boats!
Yes a small one the size of 2-3 soccer balls but never that big.
Only the Godstone one probably about 15 miles away
Just my ex, but not one on land.
only in my dreams... lol
